Chapter 4

Kiyum awoke to the wonderful aromas of breakfast. She sat up, rubbing her eyes. Derry, Vernan, and Oren were sitting at the table eating mint pancakes while Pecan served them more. The kindly vole smiled at Kiyum. "Look who's just woke up, now. Dear, we 'ad to start breakfast without you. You were sleeping so soundly it seemed an absolute pity to wake you." The squirrel maid plunked herself down at the table and began eating, talking around a bite. "S'fine."

Vernan poured himself some dandelion and burdock cordial. "Now, this is a breakfast fit fer a king. Mint pancakes, one o' my favorites. Good hot oatfarls, bilberry scones, and dannylion an' burdock cordial t'wash it all down with." Derry was busy stuffing five pancakes into her mouth, all at one time. "Mmf, scrunch. 'Scuse me chaps, got me mouth full, wot!" She took a sip from her beaker. "Ah, that's better now. That's one of the flippen' reasons I live here, all this great tucker! Not much time f'chatter now that I've got the jolly old nosebag on, wot wot!" Pecan finished her cooking and sat down to eat her breakfast, listening as the others complimented her on her good cooking.

"She's got all the makin's of a great chef, that 'un." "Aye, her's is the best food I've ever tasted." "You can bet your auntie's slippers on it, wot! Vernan here said she was taught by a Redwall cook, blinkin' great cooks they have there too, wot wot." Pecan was obviously flustered, busying herself with eating and fussing with her clothe napkin. "Well, I suppose so, but it's just cooking, really. Just a certain skill of mine, just like everybeast else has a skill of theirs. Really now."

Once breakfast was over and the dishes had been washed and dried, everybeast made themselves comfortable to chat. Pecan looked at Kiyum, who sat on a bed and stared at her footpaws. "Kiyum, we haven't heard about you at all. Now why would a squirrel maid young as you be wandering by herself?" The squirrel maid shook her head, trying to hold back a few tears. "I don't feel like talking about it." Pecan looked at Kiyum strangely, but Oren leaned over and whispered in the vole's ear. "Pecan, I don't want to hear ye prodding her any further'n you just did. I think I know 'ow she's feelin'."

Pecan just nodded and sat back in her chair. There was an uncomfortable silence that Oren had to break. "Well, you don't tell us your story if'n you don't want to, but we'll tell you ours. Vernan, you go on ahead." Vernan cleared his throat. "Well, me and my sister Pecan grew up right in this very cave. The family visited Redwall many a time, that's where Pecan learned t'cook. We never left our home, not ever. Our parents died seasons ago, an' we still we never did leave here."

Oren took up the story now. "Ah, about 12 seasons back, I came 'ere. My kits 'ad all grown up and moved away t'have kits of their own, an' my wife had run her sweet seasons. I couldn't bear to live there all by meself, so I went wandering. And wandering at my age is pretty tough, I'll tell you. One day I came 'ere and stayed the night. I was convinced t'stay another night, an' another night, an' another night. Then suddenly I realized that I didn't want t'leave this place, so here I stayed."

Derry smiled. "An' five seasons ago I showed up on their blinkin' doorstep. Flippin' vermin rabble caught me off guard an' wounded me. I would've floored 'em all if they hadn't snuck up from behind, the blinkin' cads!" Pecan shook her head. "Oh yes, nobeast could forget. The poor thing had shown up in front of the cave, wounded in a dozen places. I had to care for her two weeks afterward." The hare pulled a face. "Yah, only one blinkin' week woud've been fine. The extra week she was poisenin' me t'the blinkin' limit with all her confounded potions, wot!"

Pecan corrected the hare. "Now Der, they were healing drinks, they made your wounds heal nice and fast." Derry stood up and strode to the cave's entrance. "That shows how much you jolly well know, wot! Ouf!" Pecan rushed to hare's aid after Derry had tripped over a rock. Oren and Vernan stayed where they were, chuckling. "Heheh, did you see 'er go flyin' mate?" "Hohaha, landed flat on her face she did, with her be'ind stickin' up in the air! Hahohoho!" Kiyum couldn't help sniggering a little bit too, the first laugh in nearly a season and a half.
