Chapter 5

Kiyum was convinced to stay another night. The squirrel maid was beginning to enjoy the company very much. She decided that she would leave in the morning, but she changed her mind and put it off till noon. Pecan and the others begged Kiyum to stay one more night. The squirrel maid stayed night after night, day after day, until she, like Oren had, realized she couldn't leave.

Pecan was washing dishes with Kiyum when the squirrel maid made up her mind that she would stay. "Pecan, I'm going to live here." A plate fell from Pecan's paw back into the tub of water. She turned and hugged Kiyum tight in her wet paws. "Oh Kiyum, that's wonderful! You'll be like a daughter to me. In fact, you already have been!" The squirrel maid struggled in Pecan's strong embrace. The kindly vole finally let her go, and she sucked in large amounts of air.

Pecan ran to her brother, who was fixing a chair leg. "Vernan, guess what? Kiyum is staying with us! Isn't that just wonderful? Of course it is!" Vernan didn't look up from his task when he spoke. "Hmm, no surprise to me. Anybeast would've known. I knew Oren was stayin', didn't I?" Pecan clapped her paws together happily. "Oh yes, Oren! He's out foraging with Derry. I must find them and tell them! No wait, Kiyum can come too." The vole grabbed Kiyum's paw and swept her out the door.

"Derry! Oren! Where are you?" Pecan shouted while the befuddled Kiyum was tugged along behind her. The cave was no longer in sight; the woods closed in around the two creatures. They had no clue that they were being watched.

Surprisingly, Pecan was the first to notice. She stopped and squeezed Kiyum's paw. "Don't move now dearie, there's somebeast watching us, I can feel it." The squirrel maid’s ears pricked up as she looked around. "Eeeek!" Pecan leapt back when a stoat landed in front of her. Kiyum kept Pecan from going back any further, because a rat had appeared from the foliage behind them.

The stoat licked a gleaming dagger. "Wot do he have 'ere Ferml? A pair o' friendly woodland beasties." The rat chuckled evilly as he pointed his spear at Pecan. "Huh huh huh. Friendly, jus' like us. Who'll we slay first Jakker? The chubby vole, I 'opes." Jakker made a move with the dagger at Pecan, who was frozen where she stood with fear. Kiyum dropped down low and kicked the stoat's shins with both of her footpaws. The squirrel maid righted herself quickly as the stoat dropped on his knees, howling in pain.

Ferml hefted the spear, glaring at Kiyum. "Yew did that on purpose! Come 'ere!" Kiyum charged the rat and the spearhead on. Ferml lost his nerve and ran. Jakker was just getting up when Kiyum stepped on his stomach, completely winding him. The squirrel maid shook Pecan until she snapped out of it. The vole stared blankly at the stoat on the ground. Kiyum tugged her away from the place, back to the safety of their cave.

Oren and Derry had returned with plenty of dandelions, blueberries, and some apples. Pecan was placed on her bed while Kiyum told them what had happened. When she was done, Oren shook his head. "Well, seems as if you saved Pecan's life, and your own. We won't have too much vermin trouble with you livin' 'ere." Derry handed Kiyum a beaker of cod mint tea and a chunk of pale yellow cheese. "I'll say, wot! She gave the blighters what for. I wouldn't want to be a bally vermin 'round here, wotwot."
