Three things for badger-kings under the sky
Seven for the abbey-dwellers in their halls of stone
Nine for searats doomed to die
One for the pine marten on his throne
In the land of Sampetra where shadows lie
One thing to rule them all, one thing to find them
One thing to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the land of Sampetra where shadows lie
The Lord of the Things
Prologue
Forged in Salamandastron when the world was at peace and war was seen nowhere, the things were created as a sign of friendship. There were four different kinds. Nine of one kind, which were for the chosen searats, seven of another kind, for the choses abbey-dwellers, three of the third kind, for chosen badgers and one of the final kind, given to a Gaugeron, a marlfox.
But Gaugeron could see the potential power within the things, and he did not like to see them being wasted. He was selfish and power hungry, and knew that if he gave the things power, he could have that which he yearned for.
So he enchanted the things, giving his the most power, making it more powerful than all of the others combined. This had effects on the owners of the other things. The nine searats became his slaves, the seven abbey-dwellers became crazed fools and the three badgers began yearning for the one thing, and could barely control their craving.
Gaugeron’s thing was much better. He enchanted it so that if one believed greatly in its power, it would give them great power, but if not, an evil being would be transformed into a snake while wearing it, while a pure being would become an extremely powerful badger.
Soon after the enchantment, a great war broke out at Salamandastron. Gaugeron had begun his plight to own the whole world. His army held the upper hand until his hand was severed by a mouse. The mouse took the thing from the hand. The army of Salamandastron now turned the tables, with the enemy leaderless, after Gaugeron fled without the thing. The mouse then had the opportunity to destroy the thing while the enemy was weakened, though his mind was held by its beauty, and he did not destroy it. He was later killed by a follower of Gaugeron, who then took the ring and used its power to become a snake and destroy and plunder the land. But he made the mistake of attacking a shrew camp, led by a fierce Log-a-Log. During the ensuing fight, the snake/searats tail was sliced off and, along with it, the thing. The searat slunk off into the woods, with only a stump left. The thing remained where it fell, being covered by seasons of dust, dirt and paw prints, until it was unwillingly and accidentally discovered by a shrew...
