CHAPTER 7
The dibbuns were frozen with fear, but Mother Diviniah herded them all back down the steps. As soon as they were safely down, she raced to the bell tower. Soon the bells were pealing out a warning. All the abbey beasts stopped what they were doing, and ran to see what was the matter. Revin, Aubbress, and Abbot Jerl, went as fast as their tired paws could go. When everyone had gathered, Diviniah told all about what had happened. When she was finished, she added her oppinion, "I believe that Martin the Warrior DID tell the dibbuns to go up on the walltops, if I hadn't finally gone, no one would have known of the grave danger in our midst!" The Abbot stood up to speak, "Yes, I'm sure that you are right, Mother Diviniah. Hmmm, suddenly I'm Certain Martin meant that Revin will battle that serpent at the Place o' no return. But how in seasons aplenty are we going to get the adder there, if it's already here?" There were several nods of agreement, then a wise looking hedgehog dibbun spoke up, "When ya leaf fo' da P'ace uv no wetuwn, why doncha leaf behin' a messy twail fow i' to fowwow?" Aubbress leaped up, "Aye! That's it!! But how will we know that it's following us, and not attacking here? Who will protect the abbey?" Several shrews raised their rapiers, it was like a signal. Some moles raised digging claws, while others held up ladles. Hedgehogs rolled into balls. Sparra warriors flew into the air, beaks snapping, sharp tiny talons at the ready. Simple mothers and cooks raised up cooking pots and pans, sharp knifes, and all manner of things. Even dibbuns raised their wooden swords,
slingshots, and bow 'n' arrows. Then, together everyone shouted their answer to Aubbress's question, "We will protect redwall, and we will die to it it if needbe!!!!" A slow smile crossed Abbot Jerls face, as he replied, "Alright then, we leave at dawn tomorrow morning." Aubbress shook her head, "Not WE Father Abbot, you're not going." Revin nodded, "Aye Father. You need to stay here at the abbey. Trust me, it's for your own good." The old mouse sighed, but finally gave in, "I suppose I'll stay behind this time..." Aubbress shook her paw reprovingly at him, "There won't be a next time Father Abbot, it's far too dangerous!" Sighing again, Abbot Jerl followed everyone into Cavern hole, where a delicious breakfast of strawberry cream scones, strawberry fizz, and honeyed oatmeal with meadowcream awaited them.
