CHAPTER 10
Somewhere in the dark chambers of sleep, Tarrow heard a soft voice far off, whispering her name, suddenly she felt herself being shaken, slowly she opened one eye, "Tarrow, Tarrow, wake up!" Grunting, the ottermaid sat up, rubbing her eyes. Sitting on her bed was Abbress, dressed in a sunny yellow tunic. She smiled cheerfuly, "Goodmorning sleepyhead." Tarrow groaned, "Oooh, the sun isn't even up yet." Aubbress laughed, "Of course it isn't, we have to leave at dawn, remember?" Suddenly Tarrow was out of bed tugging on a white woolen tunic, tying it with a gray cord, and grabbing her brown traveling cloak, while muttering to herself, "I can't believe I forgot!" Finally slipping on her tough leather sandals, she picked up her pack, "Alright, let's go down an' do our breakfast justice." Aubbress stared open mouthed at Tarrow, "I've never before seen anybeast dress so fast!" Tarrow just shrugged her shoulders, "It runs in the family, matey." They raced down to Cavern Hole, where they ate a delicious breakfast of fresh cherries, pear flans, honey oatmeal scones, damson crumble with meadow cream, and bread spread with strawberry preserves. After the meal, Revin, Tarrow, and Aubbress, each got a second pack filled with good food. Then, after shouting out their goodbyes, they headed out in search of the darkest path.

Chrassneyah slept peacefully in an old hollow log, but she wouldn't have been so peaceful if she had known that three creatures had passed by while she was asleep, one otter, and two squirrels.

Somewhere in mossflower, a cold breeze swept through the trees, Aubbress shivered, and held her loaded bow at the ready, she felt someone was watching them. Nudging Revin she whispered out of the corner of her mouth, "Revin, do you feel like..." Revin spoke the words right before she said them, "...We're being watched?" She nodded slightly, and he replied, "Aye!" Tarrow whispered her agreement, and she too held her bow ready for action. Suddenly a mouse apeared out of nowhere, the three travelers were slightly taken aback, but they greeted him politely, "How do you do sir?" The mouse smiled at them, but said nothing, Revin whispered in Aubbress's ear, "I think he can't speak, let me try something." The young squirrel took a piece of bark out of his pack, and wrote on it: Can you speak? Then he handed it to the mouse, along with the quill and ink. The mouse quickly scribbled a reply: Yes, but I made a bet with a friend that I could keep myself from talking for a whole week. I have one more day to go. It took all the friends power to keep themselves from laughing. It was Aubbress who wrote the next message: Do you want to come with us on a quest? It took the mouse a while to think, but finally he wrote down his answer: I would like to, but I think I had better not, thanks anyway. Then he scurried away, deeper into the woods. Tarrow shook her head, "What an odd creature!" Her companions totally agreed.

The sun rose, amid the songs of birds. The three questors could at last see the path they were following. Suddenly they came to a bend in the trail, before they could continue, Tarrow shouted, "WAIT!" Revin looked strangly at her, "What is it Tarrow?" She laughed, and did a perfect front flip through the air, "Hahaha, look closely, what do ye see?" Aubbress strained her eyes, "Another path! This isn't a bend, it's actually a fork!" Tarrow nodded, and pointed excitedly, "Yes, you're right Aubbress. You know why you didn't see it? Because it is so dark!" Tarrow led Revin and Aubbress to the almost invisible trail, "Welcome to 'The Darkest Path', mates!"
