4. Memories.
Finally she washed in a basin of cold water. It did nothing but freeze her face. Her eyes were still red and puffy, and she felt like she would cry more any second. She sat and replayed the moment when she had come to be all alone.
She remembered it vividly.....

Narmaadi, a pretty ferret, ran. Her heart pounded in her chest like a drum as her footpaws practically flew across the hard packed earth, sending small pebbles and showers of soil everywhere.
She could hear her pursuer catching up, and she looked back to see how far away he was. That was a fatal mistake. She stumbled on a tree root, and the tiny cradle tied to her back was ripped away from her by the jolt of the fall. She sobbed out to the little form of her daughter, "I'm sorry Mara, I'm so sorry!" She clambered up and raced forward again, her breath coming in short painful gasps. Suddenly she collapsed at the bottom of a tall oak. The tree was the only thing to witness her cruel heartless murder.
Back down the path, the small ferretbabe's soft cries weren't even heard by her Narmaadi's murderer.

Mara's eyes filled with tears again as she thought over and over, 'If I had been old enough, I would have defended her. I know I would have!'

-Oh mother why, why did you have to die?
Why did you leave me all alone?
How can I live with this burden of guilt?
I wish that I had been old enough to save you.-
