*****************************The Age************************************

Arion woke with a start in unfamiliar surroundings. Then she remembered the past ten years at the Land of Ages. The nightmare images came flooding back to her mind like a tidal wave. She began to cry, burying her face in her hands. “Veelt? Veelt dist em l’affre ar wanne glist yana serai? {Why? Why did I leave and go on that ride?}” She threw herself onto her pillow and cried until she had no more tears to cry. Ferriff listened outside the door and a tear of his own trickled down his sun-tanned cheek. He could bear it no longer. “Kalwa miire! Em ista veelt lle nalla, baaden em kui ista t’rahki ta kai sta lle amu! {Beautiful jewel! I know why you cry, but I also know something that will cheer you up!}” Arion wiped her tears away in surprise and embarrassment. “What is it?” She asked quietly. His face brightened as he replied, “Today is the day! The day of the ages!” She sat up in shock. “It is? Today? What is the Age?” She was nearly bouncing with excitement. He took her hand as he explained, “We won’t know what the Age is until exactly two-o-clock this afternoon.” She looked at her wrist-time-implant. “Why, that’s nearly three hours from now! Let’s go do something fun!” She grabbed his wrist and set off for the sweets stand. “We’ll have…uh…” She thought hard, looking at the assortments. “One Cim-lish and one umm…” Arion leaned back and whispered, “What do you want? Great.” Without waiting for an answer, she rattled out, “And one baby-bar-junior.” The candy-seller grinned and handed Ferriff the two bars. “Here you go,” He replied, “Junior.” He added with a grin. Ferriff blushed a crimson color and dragged Arion away from the stand.

Idela stood, head held high, gazing among the people. She held up her hand for silence. “People of the Land! The new Age has been seen! Behold!” She said grandly, “The Age of the Unicorn!” The crowd cheered and scattered everywhere, searching for a unicorn to have in their possession for the next ten years. Arion looked bewildered, but something nudged her from behind. She swiveled on her heel and stood, facing a unicorn. It’s white body rippled with muscles, and she looked in awe at the beauty of the horn. It was iridescent, changing with every movement. It’s mane and tail were made of shimmering fibers, and matched the horn perfectly with it’s colors. The unicorn’s large, deep blue, intelligent eyes stared warmly into hers, as if beckoning to her. She carefully climbed on it’s back and gave it a timid kick. It snorted, as if to say that she could do better then that. She felt a surge of confidence, and she yelled, “Yah! Yah!” The unicorn reared up and began galloping, melding in with the mass of other unicorns, all with riders on their backs. Arion saw Ferriff and Idela side by side, and she felt a twinge of jealousy. She was surprised at her emotion, but she put it off as nothing. Suddenly, the little bird whom Ferriff had shown to her landed on the horn of her new steed. She looked up and saw Ferriff watching her, and she pointed to the bird. He laughed and mouthed, ‘Joy Flyer’ at her. She smiled and stopped her mount, cradling the Joy Flyer as she did so. She found a small elf boy in the stables. “How can you tell the males from the females?” She asked the boy. He smiled shyly at her. “The males have a black strip in their tail, female’s don’t.” Arion thanked him and checked her unicorn. No strip. She smiled at her, and whispered, “I shall name you Rilma {Glittering Light}.” She turned towards the Joy Flyer. “And you shall be Helyanwe {Rainbow}.”
