This time the whole thing.
Part I
Enlistment
The hawk cries as a bugle
The dove makes not a sound
The buzzard laughs and cackles
For the gentle days are gone
The captain on his tall horse
The soldiers with their spears
Watch and wait for us to say
The reason we are here
We've come to join the army
We've come to fight the foe
We've come to win the battle
All this and more they know
My mother holds the knapsack
My sister sheds no tears
My two brothers come with me
And we will share the fears
We march together
All as one
A mighty snake
Unwinding in the sun
Part II
Silversong
silver glinting in the sun
my spear, my shield, my armor,
bright death that marches as the breeze
sing my enemies to sleep forever
red that as a river flows
blood shines darkly on my spear
on my shield and on my armor
liquid life of enemies
in the night around the fire
we tell tales of might and valor
heroes of the long-ago
but our silver shines no more
come and sing a deathsong
a bloodsong, a redsong
sing a song of darkest night
for our once-bright silver
Part III
Homecoming
the stamp of boots
the tramp of weary feet
across stubbled fields
coming home
the black of mud
the grey of ash
from looted towns
and pillaged farms
they are coming home
the creak of harness
the whinny of horse
make sparks in the silence
but
they are coming home
the eagle's screech
the clang of steel on steel
from the barren hills come cries
dust to dust and then no more
still
five are trudging home
the swinging door: a gaping mouth
the fluttering curtains: shrouds
this is the winner's portion
this is homecoming
this is war
Part IV
Alone
a child's weeping shreds the night
encroaching on a campfire
Mother, Mother, where are you?
gone, my child, bandit-killed
a stream where two friends laughed and played
now turned red by dawn's first light
Sister, Sister, where are you?
gone, my friend, stolen away
the stable where we learned to ride
now stands a skeleton
Where are you now, my brothers?
gone, to war, to ne'er return
gone away to not come back
the fireplace is choked with soot
the table left bare by mice
Where are you now, my family?
My childhood companions and friends?
gone, my child, my brother, my friend
dead or fighting or stolen away
for that is the way of war
Part V
Hope's Messenger
A rainbow
Bright Hope's messenger
Arcs across the sky
Below, the fields are green again
And all Creation sings
Bright swords and spears and armor all
Are changed to peacetime tools
A veteran plows his fertile field
While
Quietly
A white dove coos
