Chapter 2
I felt hard rock on my back and took stock of my surroundings. I had fallen about half a day's journey down the mountainside, to a huge ledge where Kamba and I had slept the night before. The sky was still an amazing blue, the birds resumed their interrupted chittering.
Then the pain hit. Black and red explosions traveled up and down my body, then black took over...
Swimming through a black sea, up and up, I eventually found a groggy plateau of conciousness.
And with that, pain.
I heard moaning and short, bitten-off screams, and wished whoever was making them would shut up and let me suffer in peace.
Then I realized that it was me.
After a while the pain abated and I began to look around. I was lying on my stomach in a round dwelling made of wicker or braided grasses. The pallet I was on was in the center. Away to the left was a firepit, and there were shelves with personal belongings and other things.
It looked nothing like the square mud huts of my home.
Suddenly a woman entered. She saw that I was awake. "Oh!" she gasped, and dropped the water bucket she was carrying. And I noticed that even that object was a basket instead of wood or mud.
The woman ran outside, calling in a strange, sibilant tongue to those around her.
People began streaming into the little basket hut, gawking at me and chattering in their sibilant tongue. "Where am I?" I said thickly.
A man squeezed to the front and began questioning me, but I understood nothing.
The waves of blackness took me away again.
