THREE YEARS LATER
"Et-tir! Bring me my tiger pelt, oh and my jade necklace." Ulai's strident voice echoed through the mud hut.
Et-tir brought the required articles with a smile pasted on her face. Inside she was seething. The Golden Princess of Telsud i Erendil, ordered around like a common slave! She was furious inside as she had been for three years.
But the smile on her face never wavered. Nor did her tongue as she supplied the master's egotistical daughter with some flattery. Several whippings had shown her the wisdom of this falseness.
Finally Ulai- the master's 'sea jewel' in whom he refused to find fault- departed to go to her dance.
The mistress looked up from her book with a wan smile. "Et-tir, make me some tea and you can have the rest of the night off- until Ulai returns." she added significantly.
Still with a brilliant smile on her pretty face, Et-tir made and served the tea.
She was retiring to her mat when Kylio banged in, just returned from the village pub. His face was unhealthily florid.
"Hey, you! Girl!" he shouted.
Et-tir looked up and involuntarily cringed. He was obviously drunk and waving a knife. "Yes, master?" she asked obsequiously, staying a safe distance away.
"Bring... me... the... beer." he said, slowly enunciating each syllable to avoid slurring.
The girl went to the shelf to fetch a cup of beer. She heard a crash and whirled.
Kylio lay in the street, slumbering peacefully.
Et-tir dragged him to his sleeping mat and cleaned him up. He reeked of beer fumes.
Her brilliant, fixed smile or obsequious manner never wavered, but inside her mind a wounded animal was screaming, "Why?" It wanted to lash out at anyone and everyone.
The girl had no sooner gotten Kylio cleaned up than Ulai came in and she had to be undressed and bathed.
Finally Et-tir was allowed to go to bed. But she was far from sleep.
No matter what it took, come summertime, she'd be gone. She'd take her clothes and jewelery they stole from her. She'd steal their treasures. She'd slit their throats.
Oh yes.
Et-tir fell asleep and dreamed of them, staring up with cut throats.
To be continued...
