The US government is telling everyone to get underground. They expect a nuclear holocaust soon.
Me, I've been underground. Since we declared war on Saddam Hussein in '03, me and my partner have had a shelter ready and stocked with enough food to last us a hundred years. We even slept in it.
I begin this logbook on a potato farm about three miles south of Panhandle, Idaho.*

Boring down here. But when the holocaust warning came, owners of bookstores and libraries ran away to dig holes. I took all their books and brought them into my shelter. Ha ha!

They said before the holocaust that Saddam had a sort of bomb in which the radiation would last only twenty years. Hope so.

My partner's going up. He said he won't come back until he's positive there'll be no radiation effects. He knows what to look for. He'll wait five years. Any effects will have shown up by then.

It's horrible! Saddam and a huge group of his loyal Iraquis survived! Now Saddam has set up a new world system! He's the dictator, or 'Ultimate Authority' he's calling himself. There are farms surrounded by a huge ring of towns. The farms grow a mutant plant called 'gommernuts' and the towns are mainly factories. The police force are called 'Blackmen' and there are Checkpoints and everything! Everyone even has a number!

My partner advises me not to come up. He got found and set to work on a gommernut farm where my potato fields used to be.
He says there are rumors of other people that survived. It's true a mutant kind of bird/dog has flown over several times, and there seems to be paper tied to it's leg.
I've asked my partner to catch one so I can see what the paper says.

Planting time has begun. The Blackmen have to inspect each farm and house. This also happens in harvest time.
In fact, people now count their age by how many inspections they've seen. Half that and you have their age in years.
