Chapter one: Not very interesting.
The boy scanned the playground from his chair. All around him other students were laughing, chatting and playing. This school was as crowded as any other Newcastle school he had seen, not that he had seen many.
He dropped his head in shame, then looked up at the only other boy remaining at his seat. This boy was the same age as him, 10. He was staring into space, but the boy was to bring his long time friend out of his trance.
‘Hey, Drake!’ Drake was the second boy’s nickname. His full name was Joseph Drake, but there were too many other Joseph’s in the school to call him Joe.
The second boy shook his head before looking up. ‘What is it, Shaun?’
‘Do people annoy you as much as they annoy me?’ asked Shaun.
‘That depends upon how much they annoy you.’
‘A lot.’
‘Well, some people annoy me, but most I’m fine with.’
‘No, I mean people in general. Like, the global population.’
‘Oh. No, not really.’
‘So the stupidity of people doesn’t irritate you?’
‘Like I said, not really.’
Shaun rubbed his eyes in irritation and looked up again. ‘Look at the boys playing football. They think that trying to be good a kicking an oddly shaped ball will get them somewhere in life.’
‘Won’t it?’ asked Drake
‘Not when half the population of Australia has the same idea,’ replied Shaun.
‘Well that’s their fault, isn’t it?’ Remarked Drake.
Shaun pointed to two people from year nine kissing near the office. ‘look at them. Sandy and Joe. That’s his second girlfriend this week and her second boyfriend, apart from which Sandy has had a Girlfriend as well. What’s worse is that they got together after they discovered they were both going out with Linda and broke up with her.’
‘And you know that how?’ mused Drake.
‘I was out walking and I saw Joe catch Linda and Sandy making out in the park. When I passed by again ten minutes later, Sandy and Joe were making out. I find it amazing that I belong to the same species as them.’
‘Wouldn’t that make you the idiot for not stopping Joe from finding them so you could keep watching the lesso kissing?’
Shaun stood up, walked in front of Joseph and gave him a backhand to the forehead. ‘Idiot.’
