The small girl looked up at the pedestal anxiously. It turned, ever so slowly, and upon it was an object that sent a thrill through her heart. A euphoria of unexplainable joy surrounded her; she was in a hazy forest of soft, muted colors. A crown of golden light flooded in and settled upon the slowly spinning table. Illuminated within it was a sparkling gold locket on a fine chain. Breathing out in surprised recognition, Allie moved, breaking the spell upon her legs she had not realized before. Her joy soon turned to unexplainable dread, for as soon as she moved, the beauty left. Instead of the previous paradise, Allie found herself in a dark jungle, rank and foul. The air was heavy and the sky dark as her hand stretched out to grab the only thing of beauty left; the locket.
“Aieeeee!” She immediately drew her hand back, startled by a small, black creature that landed upon the pedestal in the center of the golden chain. At first it seemed to be a stunning butterfly, having velvety black wings flecked with deep red, orange, and gold. As Allie leaned in closer, however, she saw a face upon the head, beautiful but terrible, not human and almost more like a person than Allie herself. Before she knew what was happening, the fairy-like creature began to change, legs appearing, body growing, and wings shrinking as it looked more and more human. In mere seconds, a young woman in a close-fitting but flowing black gown sat upon the now stopped pedestal. A smirk hovered about her lips as she addressed the younger girl.
“Ah, so you have come at last. I knew the locket would draw you in one way or another; the illusioned forest just helped my purposes.” Allie stood rooted in time, eyes wide in fear at the sight of the woman, her sister. “Yes, it is I, sister Allie, I have come back. And now,” She paused, fingering the locket delicately, “You will see why your sister Keda was always the most powerful. I destroyed your last memories of your family, but one thing escaped. As long as it was undamaged, you were able to escape my power and strength. But now, I have it, and you before me. As soon as it is destroyed, you will be little more than my slave, bound by my power to serve me.”
“But… you can’t… Mama gave that locket to me!” Allie unconsciously grabbed for it, only to be blasted back onto the ground by a red stream of light from Keda’s long, thin fingers.
“Fool! You cannot tell me what I can and cannot do! I was always told not to mess with magic and power, that a half-fairy should keep her own place in society! But I did, and now I have control, and can rule over those weaker than myself… including, dear sister, you.” With that, she dangled the chain high above her head and shot another stream of red light at it, severing the chain and shattering the locket into millions of tiny pieces like golden dust. Allie looked in horror for one moment, then crumpled to the ground. Keda did not notice it until a second later, when she realized something was wrong. Seeing her little sister limp on the ground she rushed over and shook her roughly.
“Come on, up wi-” She stopped as she felt Allie’s skin, cold to the touch, face still and fear etched upon it. “No…” She breathed. “What happened? You aren’t… it wasn’t supposed to be like that… you were just to be my servant… not…” She could not finish. Sitting dejectedly on the ground, she cradled the lifeless body of her sister, the last living relative she had on earth. She had meddled in the affairs of those superior to her, tried to control the only one she had left, in pursuit of gaining more. Instead, she lost everything she had ever had in the first place.
