Chapter Three
Lights flashed red and blue across the street. A police tape had been stretched between the fences on either side of the house. Police were strolling around and conversing on both sides, while neighbours stood outside the tape, discussing what they had been told by the police.
The house made up two apartments. Shaun and his family had lived on the top floor. Old Mrs Mackay, the person who lived below them, had been removed from her apartment when the police arrived.
Shaun was sitting in the back seat of a police car, hiding his eyes in his hands. To everyone around him, he seemed to be weeping uncontrollably, but in reality he could barely stop himself from laughing. He had already been seen to by paramedics. His cheek had not bled excessively, but had needed five stitches to stop the flow.
Another siren wailed into the street and the cop car it came from sped down the road, screeching to a halt in front of the house. The door opened and the chief of police stepped out. He strode purposefully to a nearby officer, in a voice similar to a grunt, ‘What’ve we got here, Davies?’
Officer Davies had already seen the house. He was a bit shaky from the scene inside. He was also the officer who had questioned Shaun for a few minutes when they first arrived, until they couldn’t get any more information. He made his report.
‘It’s a bloodbath in there, sir. There’s a one-year-old female with a slit throat, a thirty-nine-year-old with a slice stomach and a stabwound in his heart and a thirty-eight-year-old female unconscious on the living room floor. Shaun continued to pretend weeping, but listened intently to the conversation as best he could. The chief spoke again.
‘Do we know how exactly this came about?’
Again, Davies replied quickly. ‘I’ve questioned the least damaged member of the family a little. Name of Shaun Nickson. He’s in the car behind you.’ Shaun could feel the eyes of the chief swoop over him briefly. Davies continued to speak. ‘I’ve picked up that his father, Peter, came home from the pub and immediately began fighting with his mother, Lacy.’
The chief asked, ‘Shaun’s mother or Peter’s mother?’
Davies replies, slightly exasperated, ‘Shaun’s mother. Shaun went to see his baby sister but her throat was already cut. He went and got his baseball bat, then saw his mother kill his father in the kitchen. She saw him looking and chased him as well, with intent to kill, into the living room. There she tried to kill him also, but only cut his cheek. Then he swung around and knocked her out with the baseball bat, and hit her multiple times afterwards. Then he called the police.’
The chief nodded, ducked beneath the tape and walked up the stairs, entering the house to begin his inspection. Shaun, tiring of faking sadness, lay back along the car seat. He looked at the clock at the front of the car. It said 10:30. The police had been there for an hour. He closed his eyes.
As he began to drift off to sleep, he could hear one voice clearer than the rest. He did not know how it was so clear, it just was.
‘You know what would be really weird? If the kid did it.’ Shaun recognised the voice as Samuel. Samuel was a strong skeptic of everything. He wouldn’t believe a single thing without undeniable proof.
‘Who, Shaun?’ This was Samuel’s latest girlfriend, Francine. ‘You think he killed his father and his sister, then blamed it on his mother?’ She snorted. ‘As if. He’s only ten.’
Shaun heard little more of the conversation as sleep began to close around him. But he still took the time to smile and whisper to himself, ‘Idiots.’
