Chapter Six “Salamandastron”
“Red Staff would you take these three to Salamandastron?” Abbess Checkery asked, “I know you will miss the feast an all, but we need someone to take them, and no one else wants to, please?” Red Staff sighed, and said “Sure, but you have to hold another feast when I come back, Okay!” “Alright, it’s a deal” the Abbess told him.
“Do we have to go?” Melina asked, she was dressed in a purple traveling tunic “can we please stay?” she asked trying to keep back tears. “No, after what you did, good luck” the Abbess said. “Yes ma’am” Melina said miserably. Red Staff walked up, and handed each dibbun two haversack. “They first one is full of food, and the second is full of your things like clothes, toys, jewelry, Etc.” Red Staff told them “Its your job to carry your own packs, and make your own food, you may eat when ever you fell like it but, use your food wisely, if you eat it all before we reach Salamandastron, you will have to go hungry”. Then Red Staff handed then each an ash staff and marched them out the door and to Salamandastron. “There they go” Abbess Checkery sighed “Three dibbuns and a Squirrel, hope go with you”. And she turned from the gate, and walked back into her beloved abbey…
“Are we there yet?” Purr asked, and she looked at Red Staffs back. “I’m hungry!” she complained again, and again Red Staff didn’t say anything. “He said we could eat anytime we wanted” Blackbark whispered in her ear. “I know!” she told him, and the kept on following Red Staff. Melina was holding tight to her Ferret doll, and whispering to it. Purr sighed and pulled out some dried plums. Purr made a face and put them back in “Yuck!” she thought to herself, and wiped her hands on her Pink tunic. “Why did they talk me into doing that!” she thought to herself “It’s not fair!” Purr sighed, and blinked back tears. Purr put her hand in her haversack, and pulled out some bread “It will have to do” she thought, and munched on the bread…
Blackbark looked at Red Staff. “I hope when I’m bigger I can be like Red Staff, he is strong, wise, quick, smart, nice, honest, and good looking!” Blackbark thought, and he smiled. Blackbark looked around and saw that Melina looked scared, and she was sing softly to her ferret doll “Trisscar”. Blackbark walked over to her, and patted her on the back “are you alright?” he asked. Melina looked up “yes I’m okay dokay!” she told him. Blackbark smile and walked over to Red Staff. “Um, sir do they have feasts at salamago?” Red Staff kept looking ahead but answered “Its Salamandastron, and I don’t know if they do”. “Okay dokay!” Blackbark smiled and pulled a whistle out of his pack, and started whistling…
Melina looked around, and then she looked down at her doll Trisscar. Trisscar was a ferret like her, she was white and had two green eyes, and a lovely pink and smiling mouth she wore a green velvet tunic, Melina had wrapped her in a blanket (so she would stay warm) Melina hugged her doll tighter and sang.
“Fwowers O da forest
R’s bright in da spring,
Wake w da dawnie
Hear a lonly skylark singing.
Bwooks graily babblie
O’er hillyside so gween,
Stream wipple secrets
O what dey ave seen,
Tiny birdies give voices
Mid da leaves O wreat trees,
Which wrustle softly
In time with da breazey.
I’s add me musical
For what it’s worth,
And singer just for U, wove
da song O da earth.”
She sang to her doll, Melina smiled at her doll, and took a drink from her canteen. Melina walked up to the silent Red Staff. “Umm, Sir will we ever see Redwall and Mossflower again?” Melina asked, but Red Staff didn’t answer, Melina wiped a tear from her cheek, and followed faithfully after him, hoping that some day she would see Mossflower and Redwall again, hopefully…
Red Staff looked at Mossflower, and he sighed. “Poor dibbuns” he thought, “getting sent to Salamandastron” Red Staff shrugged. “Well they brought it upon their selves” he thought. Red Staff sniffed the air, and he stopped, Blackbark stopped and told all the others to do the same. “I smell a wood fire, you all need to stay here while I go and check it out” Red Staff told them. “Yes Sah!” Blackbark said, and Red Staff slide of into the darkness. Blackbark gripped his staff tight, and he looked around at the moonlighted woodlands. Purr also gripped her staff and got ready for any thing, and Melina gripped her doll tighter. Then out of the night came a sound, and they sounded like, like Footsteps! Then suddenly a hand came out from the middle of know were and grabbed Melina! Melina scream and dropped her doll! Blackbark and Purr, started hit the beast with their staff before they to were picked up! “You little rascals what are you trying to do kill Log-A-log?” Red Staff asked, and Melina fainted…
