'Tap tap tap!' Kittely's head jerked up. Lord Wirtamir was tapping his cup with a fork. "Can I have your attention?" The badger Lord called out. Kittely listened to the Gray, black badgers words. She knew that he only made announcements when they were important. "As you all know our friends The Redpaws haven't been around alot lately..." His begginings were always boring, Kittely knew. She figured he just liked the sound of his own voice. But she already knew why the Redpaws hadn't been around lately. It was because their youngest daughter, and Kit's friend, Lepelee had been sick. Kit jerked back to attention when she heard some unfamiliar words. " Crossbow Redpaw has been seeing alot of strange things lately. All the sparrows that usually migrate in the summer all flocked around his maple tree the other day. They were all headed west at an alarming rate. From what Crossbow could tell me I found that a small horde of weasels have been heading in from the east. When they came upon the sparrows they started to shoot them down with arrows. Then they ate all the sparrows they could kill. Crossbow said the sparros were very upset. Now even though Brockhall is a ways to the north of the vermin's path I think we better start with some precautions...'' Kittely's head whirled. Sparrows? Weasels? Weasels that shoot down birds without a meaning!? Kit thought back to earlier that afternoon. When she found Leppy she wasn't her normal self. She was pale and fearful, too tired to take a walk. 'I thought that was just because she was sick.' Thought Kit. ' But... She still wasn't her chipper old self. Even when she is sick she shouldn't be like that.' Kit was suddenly sad for Leppy's father, Crossbow. He was such the gentle type. How awful to have to deliver such a message. "Kit, Kit!! Come on you'll miss out on dessert!" It was Mattie. Kit stood up quickly. "Hey! Where did everybody go?" Kit looked around there were only a handful of beasts left at the table. Lord Wirtimar was talking to some of the elders and the Hedgehog family was feasting on plum pudding with custard. "Silly Kittely! You were daydreaming again weren't you? The meeting is over! It's time for dessert. Plum pudding and strawberry fizz. There's left over rolls too, and plenty of meadowcream, lets go!" Mattie led her friend around the table and into the small kitchen. After reloading their plates the ottermaids sat down again to talk. They spoke of the weather, the meal and finally the meeting. "So," Kit started, broaching the subject that she had forgotten about, "What's up with that? A bunch of weasels marching through Mossflower?" Kit thought of it lighty so she was surprised when Mathalee whispered fearfully, "Oh Kit! I'm so scared! Lepelee could've gotten hurt! So could you! Please don't go out there anymore! I have nightmares about those scummy weasels! I won't sleep until I know they are gone!" Kit changed the subject after that. She didn't understand why any body should be afraid for anyone's lives. Kit didn't know that she should be fearing for her friends's lives and her own at that moment.
