Reeve and Blade stood on the deck of the boat, Wind Chaser. She was a beautiful craft, made of cherry wood, and stained a reddish color. The sails were yellow, and both of them had a large sun embroidered on them. A beautiful figurehead in the shape of a female fox mermaid adorned the bow of Wind Chaser. She was sleek and light, and moved across the water like lightning. Reeve grinned as he pulled up the anchor, and with an eager groan, the craft was out on the water, skimming softly across the surface.
“It’s a beautiful day to sail, isn’t it Blade?” The gray fox smiled back, peering down at the crystal clear water, rippling as Wind Chaser cut through it. Reeve pulled two chairs up to the railing and settled himself down in one, gesturing Blade to do the same in the other. As his friend sat down, Reeve closed his eyes, enjoying the warming sun on his fur.
“Remember, we can’t stay out too long, or my father will go crazy. We should be back before dinner or so.” Blade nodded drowsily, one footpaw propped up on the sturdy wooden railing.
“Don’t worry, we’ll be back eventually. Just enjoy the weather, Reeve. You worry too much.” The red fox smiled and shoved his friend playfully.
“And you don’t take things seriously enough, you rip!” He laughed and settled back down in his chair, closing his eyes again.

Hours later, Reeve awoke from his slumber. The sun was dipping down behind the horizon, and the island was almost out of sight. Reeve leapt up and shook Blade until he too woke.
“Hey, stop shovin’ me, I was in the middle of a good dream!” Reeve shook him again and pointed at the island.
“Look how far away we are, dinner’s probably already started! We have to get back, and soon! My father’s going to have my head!” The two friends rushed about the boat, steering and putting up sails until they were safely back at the dock of Fort Sunshadow. Throwing the anchor down, Reeve and Blade leapt off the boat and scurried inside. They would have made it back inside unnoticed, if Reeve had not run smack into one of his father’s servants. The servant, Caron, narrowed his eyes at the young fox, clucking his tongue.
“Young ‘uns these days, no respect for their elders…come on now young Reeve, your father wants a word with you. Come on, step lively now, Master Cael does not like to be kept waiting.” Reeve hung his head and followed Caron up to two large wooden doors, the doors to his father’s chamber. Opening the door, he gestured Reeve inside, closing the door behind the young fox. Reeve stared at his father, sitting by the window. The once shining red fur was now dull and graying, he was thinning out, and yet his eyes seemed to hold a permanent glower. He looked at his son and scowled.
“Where were you this afternoon? Do you have any idea how worried I’ve been over you?” Reeve looked up at his father, and snapped to attention, head up, paws at his side, shoulders squared.
“Blade and I were out on the water sailing, sir. We dozed off a bit and lost track of time. I apologize.” Cael Sunshadow strode over to his son, teeth clenched.
“Out on the water? How many times have I told you to stay off that lake without permission from one of your elders? You disappoint me Reeve, I expected better of you. Simon, Carter, and Nysest all follow my rules without complaint. But you…you are too independent for you own good. Ever since your mother passed away, I’ve noticed a change in you.” Reeve glared up at his father.
“I’ve noticed a change in you too, you’ve gotten a lot more incapable!” Cael slapped his son across the face.
“How dare you speak to me like that, Reeve Sunshadow! Do you not think I can manage my own fortress? Did this fortress fall when it was attacked by all sides by the horde of Lerfang? No! And I was the keeper of the fort! Go now, remove yourself from my presence, you are a disgrace to the family name!” Reeve turned on his heel and stormed out of the chamber, tears of anger and defiance in his eyes.
