Reeve sat in one of the higher branches of his oak tree, rubbing furiously at his eyes as he thought about the argument with his father. Why, oh why couldn’t he be kinder, like he was before mother died? Mother…he still remembered her, before she became infected with that disease. She was a beautiful red foxmaid, with large blue eyes that sparkled no matter what her mood. She wore a soft periwinkle gown with a matching headcover, and always smelled of lilacs. They had all been so happy, for it was hard to be sad or angry around Athena Estralia. She made the world worth living in…but now she was gone. Reeve sighed heavily and looked at a necklace his mother had given him a few seasons before she died. The pendant was a silver dragon, wrapped around an emerald orb. The dragon’s eyes had been set with two tiny pieces of sapphire, and a thin ruby tongue flicked out of its mouth. The pendant hung upon a piece of plaited black twine. Reeve blinked several times and climbed down the mighty oak trunk, paw over paw, until his feet touched the soft green grass.
“I cannot stay here any longer,” he said quietly to himself. Standing in the shallows near the boat, he took a look at the fort where he spent so much of his life. Turning back to the boat, he put a paw on the long rope ladder to board the boat.
“Reeve, wait!” The young red fox turned to see his best friend sprinting toward him. Panting, Blade splashed into the shallows, his eyes meeting Reeve’s. “Listen mate, I know how you feel about your life. So wherever you’re going…I’m going with you.” Reeve smiled and patted his Blade’s shoulder.
“My good friend, I was hoping you’d come with me. Let us go find a new place, and a new life.” The two young foxes embraced briefly and climbed the ladder onto the Wind Chaser, eager for a new adventure.
