"Deripe! Deripe! Wake up, Deripe!!"
The leveret's lurid eyes flickered open, lids leaden. A shape blurred into vision; it was his anxious otterfriend, Quixia. Her features were smooth and subtly pretty, accenting a resolute, determined jaw and slightly slanting honey-colored eyes. He blinked, sitting up suddenly, wincing in pain. "Wha? What happened?"
"Y'were out there in the freezing cold, unappropriately clothed, when it was flippin' way past midnight, that's what happened!" His mother's stern voice reached his ears. He winced once more, but not for the pain that dully throbbed through his body. "How many times have I flippin' well told you that you are t' stay in the Abbey after supper? You could have blinkin' well frozen to death, you thick'eaded leveret!!"
Deripe was unmoved. He had undergone this lecture many times before, for every foolish thing he had done. Sticking out his jaw stubbornly, he stared at the scrubbed wood floor of the infirmary, eyes showing fierce defiance. Hiding a mischevious grin, he shrugged, putting on his most sincere tone of voice. "I hear you, mum. Sorry 'bout that. Won't happen again."
Biffe Flightleap sighed, taking her son's chin in one strong paw. "Lissen up, laddie buck. These kind beasts at Redwall don't want to be aggravated by yore foolish actions, so it better not happen again." Deripe avoided her angry blue eyes. "Sometimes I wish I had left you to be raised in Salamandastron, with yore cousins! But no, I 'ad to give you a proper upbringing at this kindly place. Do I get any thanks f'r it? NO!" She said this last word so forcefully that Quixia jumped in surprise. "Go on, run along now, don't want y'to be late for Abbey School."
Deripe rose stiffly from the infirmary bed and stalked off, following Quixia towards the steps in front of the gatehouse. There they threw themselves down, listening to the dull voice of Brother Reggan drone on like a sluggish bee. Deripe found his mind wandering back to the Long Patrol, the clamour of the mess hall, the jovial lighthearted words of the troops, the strong presence of the Badger Lord. He ached to leave, a plan slowly forming in his mind.
