Sweeping back her travelling robe, she dismounted her stallion and bade her Companion to the ground. As the goldfinch hit the ground, it shifted into a miniature leopard and rubbed himself fondly against his mistress's legs. "Come, Tiralithwiel. And if you dare make a fuss, I shall invent the cruelest death imaginable for you!" hissed Scarlet, as the stallion behind her snickered.

Tiralithwiel smiled at the empty threat and purred deeply. "Perhaps, Thinbault. Perhaps," answered the leopard, turning to glare at the stallion.

"You too, Belaldur," Scarlet quipped, drawing up the stirrups. The stallion stifled his snickers quickly and feigned innocense. "My Lady ..." he began hurriedly.

"Hush!" hissed Scarlet. "I am plain Scarlet now, I'd thank you to remember. We will forget the past and concentrate on the present and future. Now come and be quiet. I'll not have you disturb the queen."
