One thing to think about when it comes to buying a motor from an engine builder is the location. I myself have bought parts from Reher Morrison and Steve Schmidt, and trust me the cost of shipping is still less then the taxes you will pay on buying something bought from your home state. -- Either one does excellent work, 18:13:33 10/09/03 Thu

To me, it would be a toss-up between Steve Schmidt, and Reher Morrison. Even though they are both at the upper pay scale, both of these guys build very reliable real time horsepower, with no complaints that I know of. The other guys, I have seen and heard complaints of. Some of them have exagerated HP claims. Do not rule out Sonny Leonard. He may very well be "the best" (BBC's), but again, very expensive. Last of all, get the largest cubic inch motor you can afford (regardless of SBC or BBC). Regardless of what some may claim, big inches does not mean high maintenance. Keep the RPM's realistic and the maintenance will not be necessary. Whoever you decide to buy from, can direct you to the best motor for your application. I do not think Reher Morrison will steer you wrong. You are right about shipping. It is a cost factor and they are closer. Musi builds a good motor, but it would have to be shipped from New York. Be honest and realistic about what you want to accomplish in the end. Whoever you buy a motor from should ask alot of questions about your application. If you are not in a hurry, then I too would consider Bill Doucet. He is straight up, honest and down to earth. He would probably save you some $$$. He also takes a personal interest in every engine he builds. I also think a turbo set-up similar to SS747 (in a lighter car) would be trouble free and be relatively easy to duplicate. Ultimately, have a well thought out plan for the entire combination of the car you want to build and stick to it till it is finished. Good luck and I hope to see that new motor in a car soon in our area.

yes you are right about what kind of car and application for that car. also looking at the longivity, been noticing that the morrison has a good lasting engine if maintained right. not to go against the other man but i know that for every dollar i spend that it has to count, so for me the bang for buck is morrison and that application will be bbc and ready for the sauce, so coming to a track near you in the future. want to thank the others for the input helps make a person see what others are thinking just in case i miss something in the thought process.also you are right every cubic inch i can afford will make it better not have to run the engine as hard to get the times looking for.

May we concur on these facts? 1)If a true street car is to be truly street driven, then the logical choice is a hyd valvetrain. 2)If a true street car is to be driven to a a real destination, perhaps the types of trips that motorcars were designed to fulfill, then available pump gas must be THE consideration. The only car that can fulfill the intent of a passenger motor vehicle must adhere to these limitations. The engine that most readily meets these parameters are computer fuel injected sb or bb, hyd- actuated valvetrained, TURBO'D & INTERCOOLED, positive displacement piston engines. Agree or Disagree?
No player in the current Top Gun class really qualifies...mine included. Even though my valve adjustment stays firm, there is no way of knowing when a roller lifter axle is going to let go. These are 1000 mile throw-away pieces; same goes for the springs. If GM marketed a true street car that couldn't make 1000 miles, who'd buy it?
There are those cars that make a better attempt at realworld streetability than others. I think that J.C., myself, Bryan C., and that Mustang have made a decent attempt but failed to hit the mark. But, alas, there's the guys wearing tubs (no place to carry a spare), decal headlight crew whom I wish would just go away, and the race gassers, which never are seen on the open road. These are not realworld streeters, only impersonators. But it is the engine c.r. and valvetrain that ultimately defines the vehicle's personality.
I don't think that I was the only one watching Turbo Mike trolling around the Hallsville pits back in Jan 2003, Weldon fuel pump whining in the rear. This underscores the reality of which I speak.
Think, think, think. Think turbo, intercooler, computer fuel injection, and light-weight. More cubic inches are still better than fewer cubic inches in any case, but always factor in practicality; which is to ask, "Must I use a solid roller and race gas compression ratio?" To steal a phrase from Field of Dreams, "Build it and they will come."
(I still contend that 90-99% of the vintage Dodge's are where they belong) ha ha ha.

I thought we built these cars to race,not to hide behind those silly rules. Make-up your mind which side of the fence your going to stand on , is it a street car or a race car ? No matter what you decide upon, big power #'s equate to big headaches. In fact Big Wiggle and I were lurched over the fender of his old Imp last night gazing at the monstrous 706 trying to concur. After much debate we agreed that there is such a thing as "loading the wagon." Buying a Pro Mod motor to be the Big Bull of the Woods is an expensive venue at best. It would be more akin to ludicrous. How much smiles/gallon is this thing going to ultimately yield? The answer is "Not Enough" when you consider that at 16.7: 1 c.r. it drinks only the best wines. With the horrendous solid roller cam profile, it will never see more than (4) passes w/o a full compression check, valve adjustment, etc. That's not a whole lot of fun when you've got to have a 4 man "knowledgable" crew with you just to start the foolish thing up. One start-up backfire and there goes your $3000 intake system. One nitrous backfire and similar consequences but add (1) nice hood to the list of carnage. The facts be known, if Pat Musi gave me one, I couldn't afford to run it; similar to Donald Trump handing you his private jet; you probably couldn't afford to fly it; cost/hr prohibitive.
This is not the only example of cars in the area that have "loaded the wagon" I know of a 2nd gen Camaro with some of the most beautiful race car work conceivable, best fuel system, best parts in the long-block, best twin turbo set-up, and best engine management system that money can buy that hasn't yet been even cranked because somebody "loaded the wagon"
Personally, I've built a larger displacement BB Chev that has only one major drawback from complete streetability; it's valvetrain. I myself "loaded the wagon" with a set of race heads that weren't really necessary for the goal that I was trying to achieve. These heads demanded a solid roller cam and nothing else would sate their inherent appetite to move air.
Whether it's a Gene Fulton, Reher Morrison, Sonny Leonard, Pat Musi, etc, etc, etc, beware of "loading the wagon" because any of these type vendors can definitely throw a lot of crap into the back of your wagon.
Personally, I think a single turbo'd, intercooled, mild hyd cam/valvetrain, computer fuel injected sb Chev in a lightweight vehicle (2700-3000 lbs) would hold off all but the baddest Moutain Motors, including mine, in the Cenla area for sure, while maintaining perfect streetability. I intend to build one soon; lots of spare parts lying around.
On another note, my head porter (name witheld) says to stay away from those Shafiroff pieces as the ones he's dyno'd don't make remotely the power that the builder claims. And when companies sport lots of advertising, it means that they're generally growing and growth dictates more help and more help generally means lower quality control and less quality control equals a poor performing engine that will yield a great frown on your face when you mash it!

he has done a few motors for me and i can say they yeilded better times than i asked for.

he does every step his self not some employee

he doesnt have engines in stock like some named above but his motors are built to what u need

well dont know about some of them other guys, but i dont think reher morrison would (load the wagon)on you. they build some nice pieces.when the dyno sheet says it makes 845hp it makes 845 hp. my father-in-law purchased a 522 from them about 4 years ago. he runs super gas and super comp with it. has not had a problem with it yet. nothing has broke and is still running stong. other than replacing valve spring and bearings after the season of running. he done alot of research on everyone and decided to go with them. 1 casue they was close and 2 they stand behind there products. alot of the other guys will not based on what he was told by other racer that had the other guys motors.

they have a performance quide on the website with a list of their motor and hp ratings and what a certain weight car would run with that motor. its just about dead on. on there chart they say the 522 will go 8.40@157 in 2400 lb car. his car @ 2450 went 8.32 @162.

Dang Todd, those are some very impressive numbers you are claiming. Lets see... a B1 540 makes about 950, maybe 975 HP. At 169 MPH, that puts the car at 2300 Lbs (with you in it). That thing must have a carbon fiber body and all tube chassis. Sounds like a killer car! If you are for real, then we are gonna have a new street king! When you spray it, that thing is gonna go in the low 7s. Ol John Forrest better watch out!

Yeah, its got lic. plates, working headlights, taillights, horn, blinkers, wipers (if I put them back on), and a 5" exhaust/muffler system to the rear axle. The inspection sticker is on a little plate that I put in the window when I drive it on the street (its a race car mostly, but is streetable when I need it to be). Is that your blue Mustang........nice ride.

Lastly, yeah, come get some when Mali is put on the trailer........LOL. I guess if I pulled 2-3 plug wires off he'd most likely have a chance, but its a BIG TIRED Chivy, so I guess I should be skkeeeeeeeeeeeeerd........LOL, NOT!

i read the message that Bryan posted and what i got from it was his car got messed up and the man that was responsible didn;t really do him right. i do not think that Bryan was asking what a good job that this carroll guy did on anybody elses car. i am sure Bryan cannot afford to have this kind of damage done to his car no more than the rest of us. i work for a living and i always appreciate someone looking out for me if we do the same hobby. and i say hobby cause none of us are professional racers although there are some out there reading this post that think they are. now if bryan had not told us of his misfortune then some of us would be saying why you did not tell me this guy did you a shitty job.so before we go and say IF carrol did him wrong read his post all he was doing was telling us about his misfortune and the facts about his damage. because weather you spend 750.00 or 10000.00 is not my business, but i am as a race car driver not street car but race car which is what i do as my hobby am glad he told us on this page about his misfortune.my car is street legal will stay street leagl even if i go 11.40 or 8.40 et;s but will be a race car when it is on the strip . this was my interpetation of Bryans message. have a good day. hoghead

Bryan and his crew are the only damn people that have ever supported Mali whether or not his car was there or broke down in the shop. Bryan was there when Mali made her best pass ever, and still his word was not good enough for the rest of the committee members who MADE US TAKE the timeslip to the store!

DAVID, GUESS WHAT WE FOUND OUT WHEN WE PULLED THE MOTOR OUT OF THE Z28....The motor had one busted piston and 5 of the other 8, the top rings were broken. I guess Primer (which is in the Z28) did not like the 400 shot that was sprayed on it in Hallsville,Tx in Jan.2003. And when bryan drove the Z28 at the last race it ran a 12.00 with him and myself in the car(not when he raced you, he ran a 12.12 I believe) And he still beat the jimmy, damn it is like the energize bunny it keeps going and going and going... I wonder what it will run when he just fixes those problem, makes YOU wonder don't it....lmao just joking

Scott Carroll Racing -- Bryan, 07:15:06 09/20/03 Sat

Well boys and girls I know yall proble heard I had Mr Scott Carroll install a roll Cage in my Car. Well as far as the cage He or they done a pretty decent job or I thought till I got ready to install the rear seat that was guaranteed to fit well the rear bars were to low and lets just put it mildly I was pissed. It took me 1 1/2 hours to remove the interior and 10 hours to install it. While it was at his shop which sits behind a Bar it was left outside and he promised me it would be inside or I would not have left it. It has a scratch on the left front fender. It has a dent and a scatch on the right front fender. It had a three inch diameter circle of what looked to be fiberglass rassium on the right hand door which they were kid of enough to remove which took acetone to remove. To some it all up I paid the man $750.00 to get screwed hell I could have order the materail and done it myself for under $200. If any of yall are thinking of installing a cage Please keep this in mine and call someone else. If you have a mud truck or a dirt track car that has not been painted yet or require interior give him a call he will proble do ya a decent job. THIS IS THE NICEST THING I CAN SAY ABOUT HIM EXCEPT PAYBACKS ARE A B_ _ _ _.

Sorry to hear bout candy. Don't know what happened, but I will say that does not happen often. Actually, I've never heard anything like that happening at his shop.
Usually, he forsees circumstances happening, and will ask you or at least let you know there could be a possibility of something not working out right as planned. For example: it was a possibility that Mali's windshield would get cracked when she got her new cage, and he was right. At least we prepared ourselves for that possibility before hand. Scott's been in that business for a long ass time and he knows what he's doing as far as chassis' go. I admit that he is "ruff around the edges" as far as his charisma goes, but that's just the way he is, he's old school.
I'm not taking sides here b/c there's always 2 sides to a story. But, you are the one who forget to leave your keys with him, and didn't someone recommend that your cage be installed before you had it painted?
We really hate to hear about what happened, b/c you're someone that we recommended to him. What does that make us feel like??? We feel badly about that.

Theres not much that can be said Byran, Except thats terrible. I'm for one am starting to think a person can't get anything done at a place of "business" anymore. Scott doesn't need us to send him any business. He stays busy enough without our help. You can smear his name, his business, etc... all you want to if you think it'll hurt him any, you're sadly mistaken.

Eddie, Yes that is chicken bones car. It is in Hot Rod or Car Craft magazine in an article highlighting Nastalgia Pro Street Cars. The magazine reported it runs some low 8's. Also, I was thinking, Car Craft usually highlights a "lost drag strip" in the beginning pages of their magazine. What do you think about submitting the old "Forest Hill dragstrip" before and after "resurrection". We may get some ink in the magazine and a mention of the racepics web page. Just a thought.

needless to say its still a vortec headed motor and its making some power.

i remember a conversation in a chat room where u said that noone could tell because of balancer size...that should have been the hint that it wasnt a 305.

anyhow you got a good running ebay queen there....i projected with the 305 inch motor 12.80s....now knowing the real cubes i see where the et difference is coming.

the jimmy came in at 3120 with out a driver...the motor has to be making 450-475 at the crank. no matter what thats impressive out of a 500 lift cam stock headed motor.

i see 1190s in the cool weather thats coming not bad for a project that has less than 3500 bucks from start to finish in it.

now just wait till jen finds out...shes gonna lay it on you bad for fibbing....lol

Sorry you guys get your panties in knots but the facts are the facts. Candy ain't making as much power as Chucky when both cars are running at their best. Chucky is moving 4620 lbs, Candy maybe 3400. Candy ain't never seen the 9's and maybe never will with a 468; but don't fret, Chucky won't either.
If you hillbillies doubt what I just posted, let's haul both cars to Lawrence Conley's chassis dyno in Houston, strap 'em down, and push the loud pedals to the floor. You will witness what any sane person knows.
Did Candy whip Chucky's ass twice? YES HE DID. Did Chucky have problems? YES HE DID. Has Chucky witnessed these problems in several of his previous races? YES HE DID AND LOST!......... BUT I will tell you that he had all of his power when he ran Iroc-X, up until he ran the motor into detonation and blew the head gaskets off. In fact, he jumped "X" 1-2 lengths from a 60 mph roll for about 250 ft till I slammed him with a 200 shot of nitrous. As coincidence would have it, his head gaskets blew at about the same time and X left him; just like Candy did.

Frenchman You are as bad as the rest of that gang! He had full power when he ran you detonating right. Just worry about your own car get it fixed and prove what your saying because your car is on Chuckys level and so are you. As for as that Chassis Dyno You can have 1400 HP to the ground and get outran by a 800HP car so don't even go there. If his car was running like that why did he RACE? He said Chucky was ready three times in Race Mode with both of them Stupid looking pipes hanging out of the hood. Heres a better excuss for him that damn turbo was sucking so much air that it sucked a bat down in the inlet and clogged the turbo up. But in realism the hot fumes from Candys exhaust as it flew by Chucky was the problem.

Let us acknowledge issues that are not so obvious. Mike probably has more invested in his car than most. His outweighs EVERYBODY ELSE'S without comparison. Fuel-injected, turbo'd, intercooled, nitrous-enhanced 383 inch displacement powerplants will produce more power than any 468 nitrous-injected normally aspirated big-block. Chassis dynos exist in the Houston area that can prove this point. (I'll pay for the demonstration if you like)
Chucky usually runs well initially because the parts have not become hot enough to detonate.
Chucky will whoop your ass as the problem has been remedied as of today.
There is a good chance that Chucky will not finish the next race because nitrous and turbos don't mix. He'd fare better if he simply removed the bottle.
I think that his dump pipe is as ridiculous as it gets and not needed.
And most importantly, "Cars that run the big mph at the track are the ones that you'd better avoid on the street"
Nobody in central La. that I know of has beaten my street car's mph record at Eunice. (149.77 mph w/ a 200 shot spinning wildly through 1st and 2nd gear) When you approach this terminal velocity, let me know and I'll easily up the ante to 155 mph, at will.
This is what it will take to ready X for your spanking. Fuse box, wiring harness, factory carpet, (2) seats, fab'd dashboard, switch panel, steering column and lots of laughs to go with the stomping I'll give you. Your little, anemic, punk 468 ain't got the beans to mess with an injected, Meaux-headed 571 bad boy. You can bet the farm on that. How about doing it this Friday night? No money necessary, just for bragging rights?
Just because X can beat him on the street doesn't mean that you can. I admit, though, that you will handle him at the dragstrip.
Remember this though. Temper is what gets you in trouble and pride is what keeps you there. Get ready.

It won't even be a contest and even Bryan knows it. And for all practical purposes, inform him that J.C. beat Frenchman by .04 second in the 1/4 mile at Eunice last race... that would be less than a length for sure. X was carrying right at 150 mph through the traps and J.C. in the 1-teens. It seems that he has forgotten. By the time that Candy hits the 9's, X while in full street trim, will have hit the 8's. This is a fact.
Moreover, if Candy will race Turbo Mike again, Frenchman will donate to Candy his race fuel and all the nitrous that Candy can inhale. Then the Frenchman will race the winner, for what it's worth.
I didn't understand that Candy was going to be down for 2 weeks. Shucks, X is poised and ready for this Friday night, even after the horrendous internal fire of last Friday evening. Why don't you change your plans, Bryan, and make me "eat my words?" (I think that's what you posted)

Chucky got stuck by his own knife. Candy, OH I'm sorry Mr.Callie your car runs real good. Chucky underestimated it. Chucky don't believe what he saw i did everything to my car but take the motor out and found no problems. I even called Jobe in New York and he said it must have been the weather. The weather wasn't right. He is sending me a weather gage to test the weather. Man, Chucky don't understand he's never been beaten that bad before. You have to try Chucky one more time. Chucky just can't swallow that pill right now just one more time Mr. Callie and Chucky will be at peace.

Since there are so many crybabies in this club, and everyone is bitching about all the rules. We can't make everyone happy none of the time. Here's an idea for all those whining brats and others. Tell us all what each of you think about these new rules.
#1. ALL CLASSES WILL NOW BE "RUN WHAT YA BRUNG, HOPE YA BRUNG ENOUGH". No more all motor classes, no more only 1 power adder or no power adders.
#2. ET BRACKETS WILL REMAIN THE SAME IN ORDER TO PLACE EACH PERSON IN THAT PARTICULAR TIME BRACKET. If you spray it to get that time, then you had best be ready to spray it the rest of the time.
#3. EACH SPOT HOLDER KING/QUEENS, HAS THE CHOICE OF WHETHER TO GIVE A SPOT TO A SLOWER RUNNING CAR/TRUCK OR NOT GIVING A SPOT. IT'S STRICTLY UP TO THAT PERSON.

I think that rules should stay as is,We only have 3 more races til We pick up new sponcers and can revamp all rules for next year. think it has always been up to the spot holder to except a challenge from a car not thought to be legal, so it kindof allows for good racing with any combo. You didnt hear Me back down from a certain tank that may or may not be legal. did You? also We may need to check with the sponcers of the class before making changes, because each sponcer made an agreement based on original rules. But like You said You cant keep everybody happy at all times.

Say like Paul Harvey, "For what it's worth" I took a ride in SS-747 today and she is definitely suffering a power loss. It doesn't show up till 2nd gear when full boost develops. Intermittent belches of raw fuel out of the Caterpillar D11R exhaust pipe (now offered WITH raincap) leaves the tell-tale evidence of an inlet pressure side leak. The fuel injection attempts to cover the high boost/ low boost surges and power-loss is the result. She might have a "little more" left in her.
Since X is burned down for a couple of weeks, (welding accident) maybe someone else want to try her?
These are "just the facts, ma'am"
