Subject: backup point guard

Let's say Dedrick Finn becomes bedridden with the flu in mid December. Lionel Chalmers then fouls out of a game, leaving us with no true point guard. Who brings the ball up for the Muskies? Romain Sato? Keith Jackson? David Young? I am guessing that it might be David Young. It will probably never happen, but I have to wonder who will back up Finn and Chalmers at the point. Alvin Brown was the obvious choice last year. This year we have no obvious choice. Any thoughts?

[> I think that if it gets to a third string guard it would have to be Young before the other guys because he is a better ball handler. Let us all hope it does not happen. BTW Snipe congrats on the operation in BAGRAM, Afghanistan which was named after you: Read story http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,51656,00.html -- muskieman, 14:26:55 05/02/02 Thu

[> [> [> If they would have named it operation Homeskillet, the war would have been over and terrorism vanquished worldwide. Calling even a part of this war "snipe" invited a long, drawn out contest. Too bad they missed their chance. -- Homeskillet, 14:45:47 05/03/02 Fri

[> [> [> [> Let's be honest, if they named anything Homeskillet, somebody would lose their job. Face it, Snipe is cool. They put these things through test markets, and they found out that the American people love the Snipeman. Homeskillet never got out of the initial testing. [> [> What are the odds that Thad actually lets a guard walk on to the team. I know the caoches have prefered bigger guys over the years, but it's not completely unheard of. Even so, I would have to go with Young as the third option ball handler, but we'd be screwed if we ever got in that spot. -- Homeskillet, 15:45:02 05/02/02 Thu

[> [> [> It isn't out of the question at all. If some 5-10 guy could at the very least really handle the basketball, it may not be bad to work out some walk ons for the point guard spot. I don't think Jackson has a great handle, and Romain has only played a few years. Young isn't a point guard, but his years of experience at guard would probably make him the favorite for it. -- Snipe, 18:02:48 05/02/02 Thu

[> [> If LC and Williams would have not been available, Alvin clearly would have been the man. It didn't happen then, and I suspect it won't happen next year either as long as we stay healthy. Sometimes I dig deep for these summer topics. -- Snipe, 18:05:50 05/02/02 Thu

[> Losing Williams I think was big. Sure, he may not have had many minutes until Chalmers and Sato leave, but would have been the third player that could handle the ball. Without Finn and Chalmers, X would be in serious trouble. But, it didn't happen this last year, so.. -- MS, 15:35:27 05/03/02 Fri

[> [> You can never have too many guys that can shoot and handle the ball. Both Xavier and Thad Matta have played 3 guard sets in the past. I was sad to see the kid go, because you never know what can happen. Good to see you post MS. That new A-10 board is getting no traffic. I don't know if it is the board sucking, the league sucking, or a combination of both. -- Sniper, 16:34:03 05/03/02 Fri

[> [> [> Hey Snipe! Whats new? I think for me it is message board apathy at the moment, along with the league sucking. I was really bummed to see Beilien leave Richmond... and how many tears to fill a shot glass? -- MS, 18:43:58 05/03/02 Fri

[> [> [> [> Outside of our domination, Beilien was the only bright spot in the league last year. The guy can flat out coach. We need to make sure that Xavier stays an attractive job for Matta. He is a great fit. If the A-10 has another down year, expect Michael Bobinski to become more active in looking for alternatives. Not that any of that would ever hit the press, but I would expect it anyway. -- Snipe, 19:10:28 05/03/02 Fri

[> [> [> I was also bummed to hear about Williams leaving. Like you said, you can never have too many shooters and ball handlers. I think that kid has a bright college career in front of him, and I wish that it was at Xavier. He has nice size, 6-3. Is a heady player. Great set shot. I know he was a Prosser recruit, but I think he could play in any style. If Chalmers had just 1 year left instead of 2, it may have been a different story. A loss no matter how good Finn is. -- MS, 18:50:04 05/03/02 Fri

[> [> [> [> We have too many good players, and it put a squeeze on him. It is a good problem to have, but I will miss him. Even if Finn is great, he is a Freshman. Williams would have been a soph with 'stepping up in big game' experience. I could bitch all day but it won't do me any good. I guess I will just wish him well. Any word on where he might be going? I am hoping to see him suit up for the Redskins so I can follow him. -- Snipe, 19:15:06 05/03/02 Fri

[> [> [> [> [> I sincerely hope he doesn't end up playing for one of our rivals. While it might be nice for some of you in the Cincy area to keep up with him/see him play, Williams struck me as the sort of player who would dig playing in revenge games. I hope he comes down here to Vanderbilt, they just lost their best shooting guard. That way I could see him play and wouldn't really have to worry about a revenge factor. Plus, i would love to see an SEC school picking up Xavier's scraps. -- Homeskillet, 10:55:59 05/06/02 Mon

[> [> [> [> [> [> You make a valid point, but I think that we will be able to handle Miami. I would hate to see him go to Dayton or another A-10 school. He needs to find a Bowling Green, Creighton, or Tulsa that has a chance to give him significant time while still having big dance aspirations. The SEC is a tough road to go down if you want PT. -- Sniper, 14:47:25 05/06/02 Mon

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> Seems like "we should be able to deal with Miami" most years, but they still give us hell more often than I would like. Vandy was mostly wishful thinking on my part, but a school like that who runs a lot of three guard sets might be a good fit for him. MAC or MVC seem much mroe likely. On the other hand, Williams is not a guy who would limit himself too much geographically. What other schools were after him besides X in the first place? -- Homeskillet, 15:00:00 05/06/02 Mon

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> The problem is that muskieman is so diligent and hardworking in his unending research on Xavier basketball in general and recruits in particular, he may not have the time to review his notes on Williams. Sometimes I think we take advantage of all of muskieman's hard work and dedication. Someday, he may just cease his efforts. If anyone knows what other schools were after Williams in the initial recruiting battle, I would like to know. -- Homeskillet, 10:31:05 05/07/02 Tue
