Gary: I have to ask, why is "your" board so important to you? I suggest you give up control (like Snipe, move on, and let it be someone else's problem. You would still be free to respond to anyone and would not present yourself as a lighting rod for criticism from anybody.
I have been already on the record stating that The Roundtable should be open to all and NOT be a private club for anyone.
In summary, Gary, it appears that you will construct the new "moderated" board according only to YOUR visions of taste, humor, and worthiness of viewing by others. Am I wrong?

- Possible New NCAA Legislation -- TexX, 16:09:40 06/26/01 Tue
There is some panel that the NCAA formed that is thinking about linking graduation rates of programs to their eligibility. One of the things being discussed is to not allow teams whose graduation rates are under 50% to be eligible for conference championships as well as being ineligible for post season tournaments. If this legislation comes to fruition it could spell the end for UC basketball!

- Thad sighting -- Darth Poon, 14:38:38 06/23/01 Sat
I was out doing my errands today and after I stopped by the Hustler store for some “groceries.” I saw Thad by his new house. He was shirtless and had a perfectly honed Hoosier gut shaped like a Spalding basketball. He had moderate chest hair that indicated he might have some Italian blood in him. He had a farmer’s tan like most Indiana natives that displayed his preference for “wife beater” undershirts. He seemed in good spirits and was supervising several landscaping professionals tending to his sizeable lawn.
As I looked closer I realized that the lawn care engineers were actually West, Sato, Chalmers, Frey, and Brown. They each were pushing a Toro lawn mower and manicuring his lawn. Coleman, Jackson, and a few others were “on the bench” with their lawn hogs. They had already shaped his lawn like a basketball court (with two three-point arcs) and had just finished up the last foul lane. It was not Cintas, but it looked pretty sweet – especially the Mike Albert Leasing Ads in the grass. I have no idea how they did that!
The most interesting thing was that Thad had them each running plays – while mowing the lawn. It was strange yet enthralling to see our possible staring five all working together in perfect unity running back doors, pick-n-rolls, and post plays flawlessly. I am glad to report that Sato was mowing to the basket with authority! It is obvious Thad runs a tight ship and will emphasize fundamentals and discipline next year. He kept them working on a new play called “the picket fence.” He kept running that again and again and was asking if we should possibly hire a new assistant named “Skeeter.”
I was ready to leave and then I saw “it.” IT is a Butler Bulldog tattoo on his chest! I could not believe it! I don’t know if Thad got it fit in with NCAA regulation 1478.22 that all players must have at least one tattoo or that deep down his heart (and his gut) belong to Butler. I know this may be painful, but I think Thad should have his tattoo removed (or at least moved to his ass) for the good of his team and the Xavier community.

- Musketeer Madness, the roundtable and this board -- Pablo, 16:38:32 06/22/01 Fri
After reading NJNP's post - it made me consider things I have yet to consider. Snipe couldn't handle things - got too wrapped up in all the negativity and said, "I don't want the crap that goes with running the board, I'm out!!!"
Gary is facing the same thing - he has been bombarded with posts about him and his family. He has faced lots of heat. He has now changed the board into something that it has never been - posts are now solely under his discretion to let the public see what is being said. This means that he is telling everybody what should and should not be discussed about XU basketball.
Gary prompted the creation of this board b/c I didn't like the censorship of his board and his comments about how he would like to think of an idea to charge people to be a part of discussing Xavier Basketball.
Gary, if you and the selected people that share your views about XU basketball are sick of any other viewpoints - or you are sick of personal attacks from the roundtable - it is time for you to start your own board - one that is not under the name of the roundtable. The roundtable board should be able to discuss basketball - not the boards or moderators themselves.
Gary - you have done a great job, but it might be time for you to consider stepping down as Musketeer madness roundtable moderator and taking your selected forum/people to another realm of internet discussion. It is unfortunate that you and your family were fodder for negative discussion - but you signed up to be the brunt of things as the moderator. If things got too hectic - take a break - relax and start a new board - one with passwords, and for ultra serious discussion only - let me take over - I will put up a link to your board - but let the roundtable remain open and free of censorship and unjust moderator influence.
Best regards
Pablo

Looks like Griffin deleted my post. All opinions are welcome on his board unless he doesn't like them. He accused me of insulting his family in a post below, and that is a boldface lie. Here is what I wrote:
This board should not be about the moderator. He named the board after himself. He censors debate. The topic continually comes back to Gary Griffin, instead of Xavier Basketball. This is the same man that has attacked others freely in the past, and now he has reinvented himself as the gatekeeper of good taste and the spokesman for the program. I don't want him to have my email address. He complains about his family being attacked, but he has used personal
threats in the past against his own enemies. I wouldn't want my personal privacy violated because I didn't subscribe to the Gary Griffin adgenda. How many people use their real names on this board? How come that Gary attacks only annonimity of only the posters he disagrees with? The man is living proof that it is foolish to disclose your real identity on an internet message board. I don't agree with the attacks on Gary's family, but he himself is not above
personal attacks. When the chickens come home to roost, let he without sin cast the first stone. I think that we could use a neutral moderator, (one without an agenda), to moderate this board. Xband would be a good choice, he is fairly vanilla. Otherwise, this board will constantly be the saga of Gary Griffin, and the board should not be about the
moderator. I agree with some of the trash that has been taken down, but I have seen legitimate points taken down since Griffin took over. I am sick of the whole debate. I think that he should try to keep his inflated ego in check. Griffin may be good for starting a debate, but he makes a terrible moderator.

FYI: Gary's board is now "moderated" board and will require a sign up.
Gary: Your solution is simply short sighted and will ultimately hurt your board in the long term. Like energy price caps, it will simply not work to your desired effect. New users will not want to take the time to register. Old posters will not want to be moderated or have you approve their posts. Everyone understands your frustrations with the personal attacks. Unfortunately, your cure may be more drastic than the symptoms and (I believe) will negatively impact the amount of posts/interest in your board.

People should have to take a simple test of basketball knowledge before posting on these boards. I really enjoy the saga of Kevin Frey playing small forward on FG's board. The guy hits about 25% of his outside shots for his career. He has never played small forward, not in grade school, high school, or college. Now it is his senior year, the geriatrics on FG's board of knowledge want to play him at the 3. Some of them even consider it his natural position. What dorks. He doesn't have the ball handling capability of a small forward, he doesn't have the shot of a small forward, and he doesn't have the defensive quickness to cover other small forwards without getting in serious foul trouble. He may be short for a power forward, but he is in no way, shape, or form a small forward. He is one of the best power forwards in the A-10, but he isn't close to being a decent small forward in this league. He is not a small forward. He is not a combo forward. He is a power forward that needs a late growth sput which ain't gonna happen. I have read the same stupid argument over and over. Some of the fossils on FG's board need to strap on the depends and get back to taking their medication. We have no depth in the front line, yet they obsess in switching a very capable power forward out of position, all for no good reason. Dorks.

I agree fully. We are at a crucial time where last year there were circumstances that held us back (Sato not being aggressive/going to the board) Skip's lack of bench pt, a schedule/RPI that compared to this years was horrible... and a general breakdown of team dynamics late in the year (for whatever reason - I still believe petty jealousy) but this year a breath of fresh air is surrounding the team. Now only if we could get another big man -I would be more confident about the upcoming season.

With regards to next year there has already been a lot of talk about will and won't happen next season due to factors such as returning players, recruits, lack of size, choking ability in the past, etc. While it is a cop out to say let's wait and see how it is going to play out, in this instance I think it is ok to make such a statement. We have absolutely no idea how are players are going to fit into Matta's system or vice versa. We really do not have any idea what kind of coach Matta is either - while he has been successful so far he has only been a head coach one year I believe. He may be as good as advertised or he may not, as a fan I hope that he is and believe that he is from what little I saw of his Butler team play last year. Personally, I think that he will find a way to make this team successful and with a full year of recruiting ahead of him will do a good job for the following year in filling in the holes which need to be filled. Of course only time will tell.

- Thad sighting -- Darth Poon, 17:59:42 06/16/01 Sat
I saw Thad today at Thorton’s on Reading Road. He was in good spirits as he filled up with $1.59 per gallon “Plus” gas. He paid with a visa and then proceeded into the store. He bought a Diet Coke and a pack of Wrigley’s gum. He paid with a five and used the “give a penny – take a penny” jar. He told the crowd that it “sure was hot out there” and told the fat clerk to “take care of herself.”
I then followed him to the drive through on Reading. He bought a couple of 40’s of OE and insisted on the brown paper bag wrapper “for proper insulation.” Thad then went to the Cintas Center and caught up with his coaching crew in the parking lot. They poured out a sip “for all his homies” and talked about how they will run “the picket fence at ‘em” next year.
They were in good spirits until Chief Couch and his safety Nazi’s arrived on the scene. It was unbelievable! Couch and XU-50 proceed to cuff-n-stuff em and then whacked the crap out them with their batons! At first, Thad and his posse did not complain because of safety, Xavier recently stopped XU-50 from using real, wooden batons (and made them use plastic “wiffle batons”). But Couch was thorough and after 27 lashes, Thad and his coaching crew begged them to stop “because they were tired.”
Chief Couch realized the error of his way, apologized, and let Thad off with a warning and a small $560 fine. Thad was upset and muttered something about “driving a combine up the mall” and got in his car and peeled out of the parking lot.
I hope this does not impact his coaching abilities or his impression of the Xavier Community.

- This was from BIG CAT -- Pablo, 13:16:37 06/07/01 Thu

As an architect, I know the general events of how the Shoe was conceived...the original architects were Gruen & Associates out of LA. They designed an arena that at that time (mid 1980's)was much more than they could afford. They regrouped, with the design fee fund that they had left, by hiring a small local architectural firm (Glaser) to provide them with a "building" that could function as a college basketball arena. The Shoe was completed for the 1989 season, Huggins' first at UC. At that time the team/sport did not have that much clout with the University and was not treated with the prestige that the program would ultimately evolve into. They also had not embarked on the major "architectural" upgrade to the campus that has been underway over the past 8 years, whereby they have introduced major architectural designs by many of the top architects in the world. (Graves, Eisenman, etc.)
Since the mid-80's when the Shoe was designed, there have been a number of architectural firms around the country that have specialized in "sports architecture". The timing of Xavier's arena allowed them to utilize the experience of these firms to create a state of the art arena. Cintas is a great facility for the sport of basketball. You are probably correct in that the UC will most likely do some sort of addition to the Shoe which rounds off the seating and resituates the playing floor with respect to the sight lines. But this has been under consideration for a number of years, having more to do with the success that UC has had and less to do with "keeping up" with X. X was not the first nor will they be the last to create great basketball environment. Looking forward to watching the shootout in the Cintas for the first time next winter.

I could not help to compare The Cintas Center to the Shoe. The Shoe looked cramped, had a poor seating layout, and seemed like a big High School gym. I know the Shoe is older (8 years?) but, the Cintas Center simply outclasses it as a stadium. My guess is that UC will build a new arean within the next 5 years.
Finally, UC's campus was unimpressive. What's up with those various hills and mounds on the quad?

Importance of maturity lost on Cincy's Little
By Dick Vitale
SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM
There have been too many instances where players have been in trouble off the court. Athletes have to realize they are accountable for their actions. How many chances does a person want?
Think about Cincinnati sophomore center Donald Little, who was the Bearcats' leading rebounder and shot-blocker last season. He would have been a big factor for Bobby Huggins on the baseline. But Little never understood that he had to grow up and take advantage of the opportunities provided him.
Huggins had no choice when he decided to dismiss Little from the basketball team recently. The latest incident came when the center was arrested for a number of motor-vehicle violations, including driving under the influence of alcohol.
For Little, this wasn't his first run-in with the law. There was an incident in a bar earlier this month; he was accused of kicking a female bartender. He also had a previous driving arrest and suspended license.
Now he is outside looking in. His conduct was termed as "detrimental to the basketball program." That is putting it mildly.
What's happening is sad. That was a slap to the Cincinnati program, but you can only do so much. As a coach, you can't walk the player to bed ever night, holding his hand. The athlete has to look in the mirror and know the difference between right and wrong. The player has to realize that he not only represents himself but also his family and the university he plays for.
Little didn't understand that.
It's time that some of these athletes realize the importance of being a champion off the court as well as on it. I don't think it's asking too much to have a player carry himself as a gentleman.
In many cases, if these players weren't athletes and weren't in the limelight, with people in their corner, they wouldn't get as many opportunities when having off-court problems.
Too many times you hear about a player getting chance after chance. After a while, you run out of breaks. That was the case with Little.

- The Beat(ing) Goes On -- The Bob Huggins Political Machine, 21:43:33 05/16/01 Wed
Donald Little, BJ Grove, and two other UC players who still remain unidentified were involved in an asault on numerous people on the 3rd of May. Heard anything in the news lately? Guess not, and you won't if the Bob Huggins Political Machine has its way.
Officer Jay Johnstone had an arrest warrant for Donald Little on 5/3, but did we ever hear when he or BJ Grove was taken into custody?
While Police were looking for this wanted fugitive, "UC sports spokesman Tom Hathaway said university officials have talked with Little and are looking into what happened. He would not reveal what Little told athletic director Bob Goin, but did say Little's account conflicted with police and witness statements.''At this point we do not see any violation of the athletic department rules of policies,'' Hathaway said.
I have to question that if the police are looking for a wanted man and can't find him, what are UC authorities doing discussing the case with him and making press releases? It is the not so invisible hand of The Bob Huggins Political Machine.
It is also comical that that Mr. Hathaway can't see any violation of athletic department rules or policies. UC players have raped women, beat women, thrown flower pots at women's heads, thrown pregnant women in bathtubs and broke bottles over their skulls, and they have busted girlfriends heads wide open by smashing them on bedboards. I am sure I am missing a count or two, so I apologize. After all of these incidents, it is hard for me to even imagine what entails a violation of university policy at the University of Cincinnati.
You ever hear Lance McAlister talk about it lately? Does anyone else in the media look into the matter? I think not. People are used to this happening at UC so much that it has become a non issue. People make casual jokes about another UC player assaulting another woman. It is sad.
This matter has been swept under the covers by the Bob Huggins Political Machine. Some basic questions need to be answered.
Was Donald Little or BJ Grove ever taken into custody? The two other players involved were not named. Why? Who are they? What would constitute a violation of University policy? What is the status of these players at UC?
What you will hear is the sound of silence, and if you listen closely, you can hear the lawyers preparing and the money changing hands in Clifton. This issue will be handled just like the others that have come and gone.
I predict that Donald Little, BJ Grove, and the other two players involved will suit up this fall for the University of Cincinnati. Both players had prior offenses. This is not a first time deal where somebody was in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is business as usual in Clifton.
BJ Grove has a rap sheet a mile long, he spent his youth in juvenile prison camp. He was cuffed by police on the steps of his own high school and taken away until he was an adult. As an adult while playing at UC, he threw the pregnant mother of his own child into a bathtub and busted bottles over her head.
But in Clifton, the beat goes on. Huggs keeps winning, and innocent women keep getting hurt, chewed up and spit out by the Bob Huggins Political Machine.
Be sure to check out Donald Little, BJ Grove, and the rest of Hugg's thugs suit up next fall at the Shoe.
It is an outrage.
