Subject: Follow-up on NJ!NP!'s visit

I saw the suggestion below regarding Alter, but there was too much to say in one simple reply.

First of all, it was one thing to tear down the University Center and replace it with the Gallagher Center, but there's a major difference between tearing down offices and tearing down classrooms. The university has no alternative right now for finding about 40-50 classrooms and temporary offices for the Bursar and Registrar (including Academic Affairs and Enrollment Research). Also bear in mind that the houses that were torn down in favor of greenspace also housed some offices temporarily as well.

Besides, who among us has visited the Gallagher Center? It's a state-of-the-art building inside, with a refurbished bookstore without all the fire hazards of the past. Still, it doesn't have the soul that the old place did - I'll miss all the nights that I would gather with friends in the Downunder to do homework, watch Xavier road games on the big-screen, as well as the computer lab that helped make insomnia something to be proud of.

Does anyone else have any thoughts/memories of the old University Center (i.e. waiting in line for Shootout tickets)? God, I miss that place.

[> Yo, X-band. See the '01 after your name? That means you just graduated. You can't possibly miss anything about college besides the hot & cold running beer and chicks yet. -- BP, 09:42:56 06/04/02 Tue

[> [> I got a mess of free CDs by having BMG and Columbia House ship them to boxes in that ratty old post office that no one used and wouldn't lock. The guys who worked at the post office were so clueless they didn't realize the boxes weren't in use. I also loved playing that pin ball game down there, I think it was Jurassic Park, because it was the easiest damn pinball game ever and I have absolutely no reflexes. Playing pool with two balls missing (from the table, not me you bastards) was also quite fun. -- Homeskillet, 10:37:49 06/04/02 Tue

[> [> [> Truth be told, you could still pull such a stunt in the post office today - they moved the post office into the basement of Logan Hall (the chemistry building) when the University Center went down. As for the pinball game, however, they had the Indiana Jones pinball machine when I was there - light as hell and easy to tilt when necessary. -- X-band '01, 23:40:30 06/04/02 Tue

[> [> [> I remember being overserved and going to the mail room late in the evening (when you can't tell time). Fully gorged on beer and pizza, we would break into the top rung of the PO Boxes and puke our offerings to all. This is what I call "giving back to the community." -- NJ! NP!, 11:37:03 06/05/02 Wed

[> [> There was once this gentleman who always down in the lower level playing that football game. Donnie was his name and he looked exactly like Grimace from McDonald's (he was also a basketball manager) he was a nice guy - but when his team had a bad play or he was about to lose - he would shout at the game and then punish the game by pulling the plug and playing a new game. It was rather fascinating to watch - then somone challenged brave Donnie and beat him. Donnie got mad and stormed out. I hope Donnie is OK. -- Pablo, 14:39:27 06/04/02 Tue

Unlike Pablo, I never actually knew the guy's name. I was afraid of grimace, but Pablo was a friend to all. -- Homeskillet, 10:04:21 06/05/02 Wed

[> I got married in Bellarmine and had to get my future brother-in-law to church early. He was from out-of-town and didn't know how to get there. I had 45 minutes or so to kill so I went next door to the Center. There was some sort of mixer or something going on and the beer line was quite long. In true Muskie fashion, I was whisked to the front of the line and given copius amounts of beer. The wedding was a blur (which is the way it should be)! -- gorilla69, 12:05:42 06/05/02 Wed
