Subject: Anthony Myles #24

I admit a couple of things right off the bat:

1) You can't read into the first public scrimmage too much, and you can't think that you have discovered anything of huge significance.

2) Being intoxicated at said scrimmage doesn't help your powers of observation much, or give you any credibility in your analysis. I don't tend to worry about my own credibility anyway.

That said, in my drunken stupor, I made one observation. Today's hangover makes me wonder if I even remember it correctly. If I get my facts wrong, please correct me and slap me about the head and neck.

We played 3 periods, with teams alternating between periods. In the first two periods, That kept the starters on different squads, splitting them up to even out the teams.

In the third scrimmage, Thad put all of last year's starters on one squad. David West, Romain Sato, Lionel Chalmers, and David Young. To round out the starting five, he added #24, Anthony Myles. Is that significant? Who knows? I read into it that if Thad had to put a starting lineup on the floor as of yesterday, Anthony Myles would have been on the floor as a starter. Why wouldn't he put his best 5th guy on the floor when he finally put all the other starters together? It sends a message. I just saw it as maybe a clue as to what Thad is thinking right now. That is all subject to change because our first game is weeks away, and they practice many times from here to then.

Anthony Myles is a Junior college transfer. He played 2 years of junior collegiate ball at Olney (IL) College. At 6-9, 245, he is the biggest and most experienced candidate for the postion that we have.

A tidbit from the Xavier offical website:
COACH MATTA ON MYLES: “Anthony had a very good preseason. The changes he has made in his body since he arrived this summer are significant. The big thing for Anthony is learning the mentality and intensity that he will have to play with to see significant time. Anthony has a great body and is very good on the low block. He does a nice job finishing around the basket and is also a good rebounder. Anthony gives us some added toughness under the basket and a solid low post scorer. We hope he contributes right away inside.”

I also stole his stats from the Xavier site, which has pretty good bios of our players. He averaged 25 pts and 10 rebounds as a senior in highschool. As a soph in Juco, he had averaged 13.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. He raised those averages to 18 pts, 11 rbs in conference play. He may be coming in to his own. His shooting percentage was not that impressive last year, at 52.7%, and his free throw shooting was appauling, at 51.4%. 51.4% is alarming bad, and a glaring weakness that needs to be improved if he wants to be a Xavier big man.

If anyone, even Muskiman himself, can come up with some stats from last nights game, I would like to see them.

Is Myles the mystery man that will round out our starting 5 on the way to the final four? I don't know, but right now I would have to say that he is the odds on favorite.

[> [> Have no idea why, but they played 3 10 minute periods. The starters were only on the same team during the last 10 minute sequence. I was quite intoxicated, and there was much rejoicing. -- Humboldt R. Snooches III, 22:10:55 10/21/02 Mon

[> [> [> If I'm not mistaken, they had Chalmers, Sato, Young, West, and Caudle on the Blue team during the 2nd period. I think the only change between the 2nd and the 3rd period was switching Caudle for Myles (or Angelo Smith, I couldn't remember if it was #24 or #11). At least the 2nd team did a fairly decent job against the starting unit. -- X-band '01, 09:29:21 10/22/02 Tue

[> [> [> [> I guess that shoots my whole premise to hell, and that Caudle looks like the first man. I could have sworn that Sato and West were separated for the first two periods, but I was overserved. I wish someone would have kept stats and rosters for us to kick around. -- HRSIII, 10:42:59 10/22/02 Tue

[> [> [> [> [> The Ink-quirer reported the same as X-Band. I thought the same as you, HRS. In fact, in may have been my blabbering that made the errant observation. I do believe we missed a substantial portion of the 2nd 10 minutes comparing the fonts on the cheer-dancer's short shorts. Did anyone else notice that their little shirts were substantially lower (i.e. no belly buttons) in the third period than at the start of the scrimmage? Damn Jesuits. -- BP, 10:55:49 10/22/02 Tue
