In response, Ami, that part of the Pledge was added at the height of McCarthyism in 1954 in response to all the "Godless Commies" Any document that has that type of far reaching meaning and representative of our government i.e. our people should not have anything to do with god (especially implying a specific deity, in this case, the Judeo-Christian "God") and thus, is unconstitutional as it violates the separation of church and state and undermines the ideals upon which this Nation was founded. Unfortunately, this comes at a time when it is fashionable to be patriotic, and clearly to be patriotic now means that we have to be entirely supportive of our governtment, the hypocritical president that is in power at the moment and his christian views, and indeed, act christian ourselves. To not do so would be unpatriotic and un-American, and aligns one with the "heathen Islams" that we are fighting. If we are not careful, we may see the reinstatement of the Sedition Acts, so watch what you say and whom you say it to.
We are in fact not fighting Muslims but those who would terrorize not only the American way of life, but that of any people that wishes to live in peace, prosperity and safety. We only happen to be the flavor of the week. Terrorists attack those whose way of living they are jealous of and/or dont understand. In the 70's, the main focal point of terrorism - unrelated to war - was France and England, the two most prosperous and public countries at the time. We are not special, it just may be our turn.
Of course, this is directly related to our erroneous foreign policy decisions of "make the world an American democracy."
WE HAVE BECOME A HERMIT COUNTRY, DIFFERING FROM IMPERIAL CHINA AND JAPAN ONLY IN THAT WE HAVE THE MILITARY MIGHT TO IMPOSE OUR POLICY BLINDLY ON THOSE THAT AREN'T AMERICA YET.
Now, allow me to explain. The American people, on the whole, are a very ignorant and reactionary sort. "If they don't look American, don't talk American, then ain't got nuttin' to do wid 'em!!!!" Everything we know about other cultures is that they aren't our own, and thus, wrong. We don't travel abroad, don't read (though I could challenge 45% of Americans to read a complex sentence and they would be unable to come to task) about foreign cultures, and by foreign I mean anything not football on Sunday's and apple pie - we're pretty fuckin ignorant of our own subcultures other than what we see on TV and in our own homes. And we aren't that open to outside suggestion that maybe they have something to bring to the table as well (unless you count Taco Bell, then its "Here leeezard, leeezard, leezard.")
A local travesty: the leading news station in Baton Rouge, the same people that are charged with bringing the masses impartial information ran a full minute ad of a waving flag behind the words "ONE NATION UNDER GOD."
I love Puritans.
