just as on these boards, there's no real consensus among fanfic writers as to when Mulder and Scully first "did it". Most people agree it could have happened no earlier than after the events of "The Unnatural" (because of Mulder's "We're not lovers" line in "Ghosts Who Saved Christmas" and Scully's "We've never even kissed" line in "Rain King") and no later than "all things". A fair number don't think it happened 'til "all things"; quite a few feel it happened earlier in Season 7 (maybe after the events of "Millennium" or "Orison") and a few do place it as early as late in Season six.
I definitely think CC deliberately leaves things vague, but I don't know if he does it out of respect for fanfic writers. I think he just likes all the fans to be able to "fill in the blanks"; in some ways "XF" is more interactive than most TV shows. Early on they would present us with both Mulder's and Scully's views of what had "really" happened and allow us to make up our own minds about the events of the eps.
How did people distribute fanfic before the internet? As a teen, I actually used to write what would now be termed "fanfic" about shows that were popular then, but I never showed it to anyone.
