You're right. It's usually when someone has had their larynx removed due to cancer. One of the judges in the courthouse where I work had this done, and it sounds very different. I saw a character smoke like that in the movie "Dead Again" and it totally creeped me out. Made me damn glad I quit years ago.

There are so many possibilities about that disc in "En Ami". You could be right in that the whole exercise was part of a scheme to lure Scully into a situation where CSM could reverse her sterility and possibly impregnate her. Or the whole point could have simply been to lure Scorpio out of hiding so that he could be terminated. When the other man was shooting at the two of them out in that boat, he didn't seem too concerned about Scully's body (and the disc along with it) ending up in the bottom of the lake. Scorpio, being justifiably paranoid, might not even have brought the real disc. Perhaps this meeting was just a trial run to see if Scully could truly be trusted, and the real disc is still "out there" somewhere with Mulder's truth. Maybe CSM threw his disc away because it proved to be as useless as the one he gave Scully. And who knows what really was on the disc? CSM said it was the cure for all human illness, but was it? It could have been anything, a design for a weapon, data about the hybrid project, anything at all. We only have CSM's word for much of the information in that ep and he has been somewhat less than entirely forthcoming in the past.
