Subject: Mulder chewing gum? A griping Scully? And what was with that newspaper?
In reply to: kande 's message, "With best friends like that..." on 04:59:07 04/03/00 Mon

Well I didn't care too much for this one. I was kind of bored. And I think kande, you may have seen right through Mulder and found DD. In fact I thought I was just watching DD the whole time. I think he was the one embarrassed and also bored by the case.

I thought the story was ok but once again we have a missed opportunity. I'm not surprised since this was a David Amman script.( Terms and Agua Mala among his past efforts. Bleah and bleah!) Only Rush was pretty good. But in Rush DD and GA seemed to be allowed to play around which helped a LOT. I sure miss that! Since, here they were separated, we had to rely more on the writing. Uh oh.

We had kind of an Arcadia redo here, at least it felt like it, and the monster was whom? The Jersey Devil's sister? An ok plot as I said but not fleshed out enough. This ep sorely needed a closing M&S scene with Mulder realizing once again (Dreamland and Arcadia) that suburbia wasn't all it's cracked up to be--at least as Hollywood sees it.(The tv guide ad for this compared it to American Beauty). Wasn't that the point of having Mulder see the comforts of suburbia and wanting to parallel it with the seedy stakeout? We didn't get the payoff to that premise.

Amman does not know how to write M&S! Did anyone else think Scully acted a little bitchy about the stakeout? That's not our Scully! She does her work proudly and has ceetainly been in much seedier situations. Why were we presented a Scully like little Miss Pollyanna creeped out by a tough neigborhood and acting like "Ew! Ick! There's hookers here!" Didn't she nobly and without question or disdain save a prostitute's life in Tithonus last year? OK so then the woman gets hit by a truck but still...Scully doesn't shy away from that stuff or gripe. She does her job! I thought she was out of character somewhat. The phone calls were cute but not first rate dialog. Compare them to the WOTC phone calls where Scully also just wanted to chat with Mulder and you can see the superiority in the writing.

And since when does Mulder chew bubblegum? Who's idea was that? Some sunflower seeds for continuity would have been a nice touch.

OK I thought the scene with Mulder holding the newspaper over his head looked ridiculous! Why? That's worse than those umbrellas! I was confused because I did't see any rain. You know what I thought at first? Seriously, I thought he was holding it because he thought a raven would apppear and he was proving his intuition that a bird would show up and he wanted to protect his head from bird droppings! Nothing else made sense to me!

I did crack up at Mulder's caper comment and I also laughed at his soaked head at the end. Where was his newspaper then? ;-)
And we did get a hot looking t-shirt Mulder!

But I agree with the shippers. It wasn't and sure needed to be! And what happened to the much talked about kiss monster woman gives Mulder? That might have added somthing to it, especially if Scully had heard about it.
Who the monster was did have me puzzled for awhile until we saw the womans scar so it was a mediocre monster story but gets a D grade in M&S!
