Wow, I agree with detoured about being amazed at the gamut of opinions on this ep. As I wrote briefly below, I really thought it worked. (Not to gang up on you, hairytoes. detoured and I rarely agree on anything, right det? ;-) )

I don't see that this resolution negated the alien connection. We were told that Samantha went to live with CSM "after she was returned" and Samantha lamented in her diary about her repeated abductions. There was alien written all over this resolution.

Like detoured said, I'm not one to cry over TV either. I will admit that I've gotten a little misty here and there, but never what I'd call crying. But I found that last scene to be extremely powerful. The part I liked the best was the expression on Mulder's face; he looked more contented than I've ever seen him. Even before he spotted Samantha, he was absorbing the joy of the kids and the happiness in knowing they were in a better place. And believe me, I'm about as "Scully" as you can get in my skepticism about psychic phenomenon, et al. But I was taken in by that last scene and had to sprint for a Kleenex, after my sleeve had gotten too soggy.

As for the "I'm free!" line--well, it's my favorite that I've heard in a very long time. I was just so happy for Mulder that he could have the resolution he's been seeking for all these years. I'll be interested to see the effect on him of letting go of that burden. I would like to imagine that it'll have a positive impact on the MSR, since he no longer has to carry the guilt of his sister's disappearance and the need to dedicate his entire being to finding her.

That’s not to say there weren’t elements that bugged me. The hypnotic hair was awful. And I wasn’t as enthralled by the diary scene as some other people. For some reason, it didn’t pull me in. Maybe because Scully was unresponsive and I was skeptical that Samantha was really the author. But by and large, I thought it was really powerful and a great resolution to the Samantha mystery.

:-) SFP
