The Monkey's Paw is a story written by W.W. Jacobs. I'm not sure when it was written, but I think it was in the early 1900s. The idea behind the Monkey's Paw is that no one should try to interfere with fate and if they do they face severe consequences.

I don't remember THAT much about the story (I read it in high school) except that the Monkey's Paw was an actual dried, mummified monkey's paw and if you held it in your hand you could make three wishes. One of the wishes was for 200 pounds so that he could pay off his house. The next day a man comes to their house to tell them that their son was killed in an accident at work and to compensate for their loss the company was paying them the sum of 200 pounds.

It's really a good story. I think I might go back and read it again.

As far as Mulder wishing for the thing that he, Scully, and the genie wanted most, I don't think that would work. The reason that his wishing for freedom for the genie worked without a hitch was because it was completely altruistic. Everyone else wished for selfish things, which is why there was disaster.
