Don't you think that a camparison of Japan to Union County is a bit of a reach? I have to agree with the students on this issue. Ideally with the four period block the students have more time to actually be taught the subjects by the teachers. Therefore a better understanding of the subject should be possible. When I began highschool we were using a six period day, my sophomore year we switched to the block schedule. It was a huge improvement. I was able to arrange my schedule so that I could take two difficult classes with two classes that were easier for me and still get 8 credits per year. With the six period day you have to take all your required classes at once. I know that prior to the block schedule this is how things were done but it was much more stressful on me and my classmates. I think if low scores are the issue maybe we should begin searching for the problem in a more likely location, the teachers. Why change a schedule that, if utilized correctly, would benefit the students? Maybe we should start by looking at how much time the teachers are teaching during the class. What about the homeroom issue? Isn't this time that is just being wasted? Why are our children not being taught during this time?
