I think the character of Doggett was doomed from the start, as they tried to make him too much of a "replacement" for Mulder. This just perturbed fans (like myself) who knew that Mulder was a unique character whose relationship with Scully couldn't be duplicated.
They should have done things differently, like bringing in Reyes first and *THEN* introducting Doggett or bringing them both in at the very beginning of season eight. Even allowing Doggett to have still been married and with his son still alive might have helped the situation. Having him unmarried (albeit divorced, rather than never-married like Mulder) and obsessed over a relative who'd died/disappeared during childhood just brought up comparisons to Mulder which the character couldn't -- and shouldn't have had to -- live up to.
