I think it would have worked out okay and I still would have watched; probably not quite as good as it was, but still a better-than-average show. It would have been, probably, a little more stereotypical.
Generally speaking, most people think of women as being "emotional" and men as being "logical' so an XF world in which the man was the one trying to get the woman to deal only with facts and stop operating on her hunches (or "women's intiuition", as it might have been referred to) wouldn't have been quite a quirky as what we've actually got. I must say the whole "Emily" storyline would have made a lot more sense, though; it would be a *lot* easier for a man to inadverdently become the parent of a child he knew nothing about than for a woman to do so!
As long as we're playing with alternative scenarios, though, let's try this one: What if "Special Agent Dana Scully, M.D." had been a man rather than a woman?? Same skeptic/believer set-up, same background for both agents, just a show featuring two male leads rather than a male/female dynamic?? Would it have worked as well and would you have watched? Would it have succeeded with the public?
As most of you can probaly guess my answers are: no, it wouldn't have worked as well, *NO* I wouldn't have watched and no, it wouldn't have succeeded with the public. Despite what CC may have envisioned when he dreamed up the idea of XF, the UST between Mulder and Scully was a big part of what drew many viewers (including myself) to the show and made it successful. A show about a couple of men (or a couple of women, for that matter) investigating paranormal and UFO happenings probably wouldn't have made it to a second season.
