Yes, the island events (including the Oceanic 6 leaving & returning) all happened in the real world, the sideways reality was some kind of purgatory. In the limbo of purgatory, people who died before or well after Jack were there at the same time. Time has no meaning there. One assumes Michael & Walt will there, one wonders why Sayid wasn't with Nadia instead of Shannon, others like Mr. Eko were absent as well (the actor wanted more money).

Ben got to and from the island by submarine like all the Others until the island was moved, then he returned on the Ajira flight with the Oceanic 6.

Jacob has powers, don't know how they work. He apparently can leave the island and return by magicly zapping to and fro. Jacob was "good" but very non-interventionist in his approach. So one assumes that actions like the genocide of the Dharma people was not at Jacob's orders but a manipulation by the Man In Black AKA Smoke Monster. The Smoke Monster can't leave the island since he's made of smoke, I guess. If he was human, which he became again, then he could leave.

Since people from Ancient Rome and Egypt had been on the island at different times, I guess it has moved several times, perhaps it's constantly moving. Due to the strange power on the island, it's hard to get to or see. As observed by Faraday, there are time distortions all around it.
