I have had time to rethink, it gets even more confusing. I have changed my thinking just a bit. What if the original folks actually survived the crash--even if it was just for a short time or different lengths of time. The sideways episodes were where they were wandering around in a sort of limbo-land until they found each other. I think the real-life time-line was when they were on the island. Each and everyone died at sometime. The sideways flight was also part of this limbo land.

Jack had to have survived--his eye opened and he had a suit on. When it closed he was dressed in jeans and t-shirt. Of course that doesn't explain why he had a suit on in the sideways pieces.

Ben's ability to get to the mainland and back again still stumps me--if the island was so difficult to find originally then how did he make the trip so quickly unless he wasn't really alive. The same goes for Jacob--was he really only the spirit of "good" and old smokey the flip side of the coin--bad guy through and through? I suspect that that the island wasn't all that hard to find for some. Walt and his dad took the scenic route home.

I did like the ending, including the eye going shut. Aaron was there with Claire which makes me wonder if Jack and the infamous 7 actually did get off the island.

No matter how I look at it, the island seems to be life and how these folks dealt with it.

I hope somebody else has figured this out!
