Subject: Writers Strike -- What exactly does it mean for us?

I've been reading about the upcoming writer's strike (in effect at midnight tonight) and what it means for shows. I guess scripted shows will run through December/January before they start to run out of materials, but soap operas will end much sooner and live shows/daily shows such as Leno, The Daily Show, SNL, etc will go to reruns immediately.

Does anyone know specifically what the writers are striking over? Are they close to an agreement or could we be looking at a year of reality shows and a lost tv season?
