I think the concept of having several different Native Hawaiian/Asian-American actors on the show was very innovative for the 1960s. . .heck, it would be innovative NOW!! Almost all TV shows stick to a mostly white, slightly black lineup for their cast; they'll generally have four or five white actors and one or two black ones. It's rare to see even ONE Asian-American (or Hispanic) as a main cast member in a TV show.
I remember there was a short-lived TV show set in Hawaii a couple of years back and it drew a lot of criticism for sticking to the traditional "mostly white, slightly black, absolutely NO Asian-Americans" format, given that Asian-Americans are the *majority* racial group in Hawaii.
