Date Posted: 940533154PDT In reply to: Jim Morris 's message, "Council Allows Finning to Continue!" on 940484561PDT I consider the restriction to 50,000 sharks a step in the right direction and something to be celebrated. This is a reduction in last years harvest by nearly 11,000. I do have a few questions though Jim. How will the the allotment be distributed and how long will this take to implement? What's up with this one Hawaii longliner using demersal longline gear to specifically target sharks? The charter fishermen here in Kona blame the longliners for a decrease in the Marlin fishery. I recently read a report that stated that the Marlin fishery has been consistant over the years and hasn't been depleted at all. While I also disagree with the reports findings, I would like some factual data on the number of Marlin that are killed annualy by longliners (not just the landed ones but also the ones they cut loose dead). Would this information be available from the NMFS longline observer records? I have a good friend who worked the longliners for many years. He told me that Marlin catches were rare. I've personally caught a few over the years with longline circle hooks in the corner of their jaws. Where can I get the facts???? Capt.
