Subject: "oldies moment" for ya's ...

... stopped by the local Goodwill last night, and made the usual "run through" the video and music section - searchin' for "oldies" ...
- found a very cool DVD (at least in my opinion) ...
- a "behind the scenes" video, which included a bit of "Shakespeare" performed by the Beatles.
- recently "stumbled" across a song of theirs, which was the first song that John, Paul and George recorded together as the "Quarrymen" - (no Ringo yet)! :)
so, here's an "oldies moment" for ya's!
I hope everyone has a great week!
- BC :)

- "in spite of all the danger" ...
e

- the "Shakespeare skit" ...

What an amazing place Goodwill is. I'm always cobbling together big stereos from pieces at Goodwill. Seems no one values large speakers or old amplifiers anymore.SSSSSh Don't tell anyone, but for about $60.00 you can have yourself 500 watts or so of high end amplifier playing through 3 ways with 12 inch woofers. The most expensive part is the joiner to your ipod and the new speaker wire you'll need to connect it all up. Also by coincidence happen to be reading the Beatles book right now so these videos are extremely well timed. Thanks BC. love on ya Stewart

You're welcome Stewart! :)
I'm glad you liked the vid's!

You sound like my middle son - finding bits and pieces / here and there (at Goodwill, thrift shops, yard sales...)
- then, building/re-building all sorts of audio/visual "contraptions" for "pennies on the dollar."

But, you're a little more current than myself in regards to the ipod. I still have a turntable! :)

Whenever I stop by Goodwill, I always try to make a quick survey of the books too!
I have numerous books by "Dr. Seuss" - except I'm still looking for "Horton Hears a Who" ! :)
*** attempting to assemble a "mini library" for my classroom ...
- if and when I become a teacher?! :)

the other night - in addition to finding the Beatles vid - I found a "very cool" book ...
- for less than $3
" ... the McGuffy's reader of wine books" ...
- "Complete Wine Course" written by Kevin Zraly! :)

The Beatles book sounds "very cool" too!
I'll have to get a copy of that one for myself!
- BC :)

I always hit up the books at Goodwill. In fact about 70% of my 800+ book classroom library came from a Goodwill store somewhere in the country. BC, I still have not found Horton Hears a Who at Goodwill. I'll keep an eye out for a copy.

I love that clip from Back to the Future! The first movie in the series was truly the best.

Thanks Heather!
800 books?!
That's quite an extensive library for a classroom in my opinion - "very cool"! :)

re: Back to the Future ...
I think it would be fun to go back in time like "Marty" and see what my own parents were like in high school! :)

My daughter just said she thinks there's a tornado warning in central Florida?! I hope you're ok!

[> [> [> [> [> Crazy FL weather -- HeatherM, 21:27:56 01/25/11 Tue

Everything is okay in my neck of the woods. There may be some tree limbs down, but I won't be able to see the full extent of any damage until the morning when the sun comes up. It poured for about an hour. We had lots of thunder and lightning. It looked much worse on the weather radar, at least for Deltona. The power kept going off and on, but did not stay off for more than a minute at a time. The wind was cazy though. Some areas had wind gusts over 60MPH...YIKES!!! I'm glad I was home and not at school. The playground will probably be a huge pile of mud tomorrow. So, we may just stay inside and have more time for 100th day fun.

800 books...oh yeah! They have all kinds of categories to choose from (neighborhood, fiends, vehicles, weather, seasons, animals (fiction and nonfiction are separate), numbers, ABCs.....etc. We have author and series bins too. At least 30 are from Dr. Seuss. About 10 Laura Numeroff (If you give a mouse....)Clifford books coming out of my ears. The kids have access to most of the books, but I have a collection that I use for specific lessons and those books stay with me.

Your library sounds awesome Heather!
While observing a first grade classroom last semester, - when given a choice by their teacher - the students voted to have her read a book aloud to them rather than have time to play computer games! :) Which I thought was "very cool"! :)

re: the weather I'm glad you're OK! I hope Nancy is alright too! I'm up kinda early myself to check on the weather here in TN. Looking out my window - since I began typing it has changed from rain to snow. We may be using our last "snowday" today?!

[> Goodwill -- Brittany, 17:59:48 01/24/11 Mon

My local thrift store has these insane price tags that are impossible to get off a book, plus they are big and bold. I usually avoid those books, although I have found a few gems at other places.

I love shopping for clothes at thrift stores! When I was younger, it seemed really gross and "uncool", but thank goodness I got over that! Not only are the clothes cheaper, but they are really unique. A unique piece of clothing is like a piece of art. Then pair it with other things and you are the art! The best thing to shop for (for me) at a thrift store is shoes!!! Now those can be serious art! I have amassed quite a collection of cool, crazy, or just plain awesome shoes. I'm famous for several things at work (my personal favorite is my unofficial title of "Guerilla Marketer"), and one of them is my crazy shoes!

Every Memorial Day and Labor Day, our thrift store has a half off sale that I look forward to. I don't look forward to the crowds (when did the fact you are in a thrift store give you permission to be rude?), but I do look forward to the awesome deals :)

"Guerilla Marketer" ?! :)
I kinda like that title Brit! :)

My middle son has always enjoyed finding "treasures" at "second-hand" locations
- my daughter was kinda like you were in the beginning, but now she has learned to appreciate all the "very cool" items that you can find!

I like your analogy ...
It definitely can become quite a fun and creative process - "assembling" an "artistic" outfit!

[> [> Re: Goodwill -- Brittany, 14:41:54 01/25/11 Tue

I can be pretty competitive at times, and that comes out a lot at work. I think I got the title when I was watching "24" over the summer with my cousin and it sort of got stuck in my head and I would pretend I was working at CTU when I was at work. I needed an enemy, so what about other publishers? So as often as I could, I referred to what I was doing as "taking x publisher down". Everyone thought it was funny how serious I acted about it, too! Ah, did I mention I work for a Christian publishing company, LOL? I won't get into it because I would get into a big vent and also I don't think it is my place, but I'll just say there are some Christian publishers out there that play dirty. I just "play" in fun . . . or sometimes there is some revenge on my mind :P

I have to go to garage sales and rummage sales for my side business of selling books online. I love the rummage sales where everything you can fit in a bag is a couple bucks! I get some inventory, then I look around at all the other cool things. I love putting random things together ("recycling" I guess!) and just random craft kinds of things. I wish I had a giant workshop where I could work on it and store everything, because I get somethings I think are really cool, then they come home and wait while I try to figure out what to do with them or get the rest of the materials, but eventually it mostly all goes to Goodwill :(

Sounds like there are a lot of us thrifters out there! Isn't there a 100 mile garage sale near you? I can't remember exactly, but in my mind it is in the middle South area. Maybe we can all get together and we can go deal hunting in your bus so we'll have plenty of room for our loot! Since we are all interested in books, we might have to set up some rules so we don't end up pushing each other out of the way or fighting over a book ;P Can you imagine a tug-of-war with a book? *shudders* I would rather give it to the other person than risk damaging it like that!

You and I sound alike in a lot of ways Brittany! I have all kinds of "crafty" ideas - it's just finding the time to assemble them! :)

"World's Largest Yard Sale" or "The 127 Sale"
This one was in Aug. 2010
http://www.lookoutmountainparkway.org/worlds-longest-yard-sale.html
But, this one is "yet to be"! :)
"TN52" yard sale - May 2011
http://www.tn52.com/tn52_yard_sale.htm
That's a lotta "stuff"!

I think they should offer some kind of "fly over" so a shopper could "scan" the complete inventory before beginning the "trek" on ground 'cause what if you're walking along - with only so much money in your pocket and think "man, I gotta go back and get that (whatever item) 'cause they had a "way better" price on it than this guy?! :) - it could be a very long walk?! :)

Hey BC!
What bargains one can find at thrift stores. Our Good will here is not great, but we have Salvation Army Thrift Store handy. I recently found a great collection of classic books and am enjoying "getting back in time" so to speak. Found Huckleberry Finn, Legend of Sleepy Hollow and other stories by Washington Irving, David Copperfield, Around the World in 80 days, The Old Curiousity Shop, and Tess of the d'Urbenvilles! Should keep me busy while we wait for spring! Also found some kids blue jean overalls and have made myself two purses. Took a friend with me couple of weeks ago and she had a blast! She had never been to a thrift store!

Making photos of the isbn numbers? That doesn't sound to legit in my book, but maybe that's the cynic in me coming out. lol

maybe it's just a means of him making a list to see if they're in "demand" or not on Ebay? ...
- I'm not certain as to the "legalities"?
- probably wants to see if they're worth making the investment for resale.

Those are some great "treasures" that you discovered Michelle! :)
Last time I was in Goodwill, I noticed a guy browsing through the hardcover books - making a photo of the "ISBN" (catalog numbers) on the backs of some of them (for future reference I guess?) And, I overheard him talking to another customer - saying you can often "turn a small profit" on certain books via re-selling them on Ebay! :)

Hey BC! Thanks for the idea! Never thought of that. I just really liked the looks of the books! Not only am I going to read them I thought they would look great on my bookshelf in my study! If you ever get a chance to read Washington Irving you should! He was quite brash for his time!

Thanks Michelle!
Didn't Washington Irving write "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"?! :)
I did some research, and found this info ...
"... late in life Irving wrote a colossal five-volume biography of George Washington, and his biography of Christopher Columbus is still considered a classic."

[> [> ISBNs -- Brittany, 15:39:14 01/27/11 Thu

Some book resellers have a scanner for the barcode of the book that they can use to check to see if the book is worth reselling. One of the things some of them can do is you can set your lowest price and sales rank, so that when on Amazon, if the lowest price is more than you set yours at and the sales rank is within your range, it tells you. Let's say my minimum price was $5 and my sales rank went to 1 million in books (in the top 1 million bestselling books). I run my scanner on a book and the lowest price on Amazon is $10 and the sales rank is 500,000. That would fall into my range and be a "keeper".

I think these scanners are mostly for cell phones? It is something you can add on. As far as it being "legit", some places won't let you use them. I've been to some Friends of the Library sales where they are banned. Personally, I don't see what the big deal is. The place selling books is there to sell books, right? True, they could easily "gobble up" all the books so the regular people can't get to them. I guess it isn't fair either way.

I personally don't have a scanner because I don't want to spend the money and I think it might just work with a PC and I have a Mac (go Macs!). I'm going to get a smart phone any day now, though, so I am planning on seeing what kind of apps they might have. When I go to garage sales, I usually rely on my childlike appearance to get the good deals. I normally get mistaken for a teenager all the time, but for garage saling, I purposefully try to look and act younger and I think I might be able to pass for middle school. Yes, the people running the sale might wonder why I'm buying all these adult books, but do they really want to take away all my baby-sitting money? Now if I had a scanner, that would totally blow my cover :P

My purchases are made with the intent of keeping them - especially the books and record albums.
I didn't realize that browsing for bargains in thrift shops has become so "high tech"?!

Have I ever told you the story of "Angélique"? I knew it was an expensive book online (like $50) and I found it at a used bookstore as well as a couple of other books in the series. Before I sold it, I was curious about it and why it was so expensive (that's a whole other story), so I read it, and now that first book is worth much more to me than $50 and I refuse to part with it, even though I have since acquired another one that is hardcover and in nicer shape! Anyway, just reading that book instead of selling it really changed my life, I think.

And that was just from memory, no scanner! *bows*

"serendipity" perhaps?! :)
or, - as LauraG sometimes calls it - "synchronicity" ?! :)

sometimes - you'll find things in the most unexpected places ...
good things ...
things that you weren't - or, didn't even know that you were - looking for ...
but it seems as if they were "looking" for you?! :)
