1. What are your views of women in fields of work dominated by men? Do you think that we should go back to being secretaries and housewives?

Yes. Go back to the kitchen where you belong. And while you're at it, get me a beer. :P (kidding!)

I admire anyone who goes into a field that is dominated by the other gender. As a teacher, I am in a field that is generally still dominated by women, although secondary education is no where near as female-dominated as primary education. This is of course not to say that being an educator is a feminine occupation. But it is still unusual to meet male primary school teachers. Although I had several male teachers in high school, when I was going through primary school, I only had one male teacher when I was in year five. Every other teacher I had from Kindergarten to year six was a woman.

It's obvious that some jobs are more dominated by certain genders than others for a variety of reasons. For education, money (or lack of it) is one factor that discourages a lot of men from entering the teaching profession. It's not very inspiring to know that after teaching for 10 years, I will be on a salary of $50k (AUD -- halve that to convert to USD). Primary teachers are paid less, which is scary. Because men are still generally considered to be the prime bread-winners of the family, they're far less willing to enter low-income occupations than women (at least amongst the middle to upper classes where people have a choice of occupation).

Science and technology is a field that is currently dominated by men because it has been traditionally closed off from women for such a long time. But that should be NO reason to exclude and/or discourage women who do enter such fields (e.g.: IT) -- just as the DET is always encouraging more men to enter the noble profession of education.

Glass ceilings exist in our imperfect society, and it is just plain frustrating to see stupid people sustaining negative stereotypes. Nova, if anyone ever pulls that on you again, just tell them that they're a bigot and tell 'em to fcuk off. d:
