Subject: Sterotyping hits home...

Okay, I know that it is a fact that there aren't that many women in the technology industry today, but does that mean that we are still the "weaker sex"?

Last night, I was having a conversation with a male upperclassman of my major. We have to work together to make flyers, organize things for events and databases, and other miscellaneous tasks. He was going to try to give me a file of the next flyer he had been working on on a zip disk, and when I explained to him that my computer didn't have a zip drive, I suggested that he simply send the file over AIM. We had been talking about putting some graphics on the flyers, so I decided to send him a few of my works over AIM so he might get an idea of what I had in mind. To my first picture his reaction was "wow great work!". This comment registered fine, but then a following comment kind of crept under my skin, it was something like "that's really good, generally girls aren't really good at art". To this I replied, "That had that stereotypical sting to it, but I'll ignore it this time :b” After this, he says "Stereotypical, how?" ...Okay...does that mean that generally men don't think that women can know a thing about computers or art?

I never did answer his question, I thought that if it wasn't as plain as day, maybe I was the one that had been misinformed. I had thought that perhaps our society had come above sexist ways of thinking, but here, to see that he didn't even see that it was a sexist comment, I guess I have to rethink things. So, I have a few questions for the guys on the board, please answer truthfully, I won't be offended at anything you say. We all see the world differently, and that’s what makes life great! :)
1. What are your views of women in fields of work dominated by men? Do you think that we should go back to being secretaries and housewives? (Although these are noble occupations, I simply used them as examples of what fields of work women have dominated in the past that could have helped create these stereotypes, if I'm not mistaken)
2. Do you think that the sexes are equal today? Why or why not?

If he was that impressed by my art, I wonder what he would think of Chee-toy's? :)

Thank you for your thoughts!
Kudos!
