Subject: two tragedies in one weekend

First there was the train derailment in Waterfall that killed 7 passengers, then there was the explosion of Columbia that killed 7 astronauts.

I suppose the thing that separates these tragedies from that of 11-9 is that derailments and space shuttle explosions are somewhat things that we've seen before and, although we hope don't happen -- do expect to happen to a degree... at least, we accept the fact that the possibility exists.

The attack of September 11 was a form of terrorism that was unprecedented. The only thing that's come close since then was the Bali bombing.

One of my year seven students made a joke about the shuttle explosion, then I quickly reminded him that one of our school's ex-students is an astronaut. That shut him up real quick (and the rest of the class just fell so silent, you could hear a pin drop).
