The school mainly teaches a phonics program, but being the age he is they really don't work on much reading. So we found a tutor to help him learn the Orton Gillingham so he can get that one on one teaching. I am trying to figure this out I thought this year he was in resource room but I guess it is MICI 6/7/8th grade Moderate Cognitive Impaired Program Self-Contained Classroom. Do you feel a dyslexic child belongs in this class? We chose for next year resource room because if he goes to MICI he will not receive a diploma. I was reading that self contained classrooms grew in popularity as the regulations of "No Child Left Behind" became increasingly severe. Many schools began placing a greater number of struggling students in self contained classrooms to ensure that specific class test score remained high. I don't want my child in with kids that have behavioral problems and other issues. I know his reading level is low but I don't think the school realizes just how smart he is. The school psychologist was suprised on how high his math skills were. And his oral vocabulary standard score is a very respectable 94. The only problem is now that they have held him back how will he ever catch back up to the level that he needs to be. Next, year for example they said he needs to take algebra how can he take this when they never taught him this. We are going to have his tutor work with him though. It just really upsets me that all of this has gone on and they would never give me any advice on how to help my child they just kept saying learning disabled.
