• My Opinion rearding rotating judges -- and Older judges.....Not on this feis committee fyi, 15:57:29 11/08/09 Sun
  I am not sure when or where parents felt entitiled to receive a different judge for each of their children's rounds. We actually used to get it as the dancer moved from stage to stage where there was a new judge.... Because parents want drive through Irish Dance, feis committees have turned themselves inside out logisitically to try to accomodate all the "concerns". This is not a soccer game. It lasts more than 1 hour to do this event, even at the PC and OC level. A little secret, your dancer is probably the same ability in front of a hundred different judges! I am sure these judges are, for the most part, fine, upstanding, fair,caring people who love this art form. They do the best they can, but it is their opinion in the end. Another secret, if you dancer makes it to PC or OC, they will be judged by the same panel of judges for all of their rounds. It is what it is. You cannot expect a feis committee to have these judges get up every 30 minutes and move. Stages wont be done at the same time, the feis will last FOREVER!
  
  Now, the "older" judges probably are sticklers for traditional elements in the dance. Things like turnout, carriage, lift, arms, etc. are important to them. I see many children doing steps that are way too hard for them for the sake of the gymnastics and what is "in" and these basic elements of good Irish Dance cannot possibly be executed well by most of them. So, the older judges are doing the art a favor by keeping the true elements important, I think.

  • I think we need to remember that ID is subjective. All judges have a bias and somedays that works in your favor and some it does not. But if you have talent in the end you will shine.   Wouldn't it be nice if there was a different event than the dinner dance? How about a drop in cocktail party for adults, with nice music and small food. Then have a DJ dance party for the high school age and up dancers and friends. I think it would cater to the groups better. The kids could dance, see friends and dress up and wouldn't have to pay for food they don't eat and drinks they don't drink (or aren't supposed to!). The adults could come and go, relax, visit, have a drink, eat a bit and not worry about how it all looks to the kids. Maybe next year? Try something different???

  The day was long and the food lines even longer but the venue was just perfect. I think the feis organizer's did a very good job. There will always be somepeople who will complain-and rotating the judges is always welcome. My dd had two judges on her stage and placed in two out of six. she came away along with her mother very happy. Perhaps some of the naysayers should help out once in a while and see how much work is involved. Many a time my dd come away with nothing and that is the case with a lot of dancers. Hope everyone had an ejyoyable day.

  • we ended up enjoying the break from competition, and when she started competing again, dd did much better than ever before.   Dd's dance floor is slightly elevated on carpet in our basement. Worried that the chalkboard paint will stay on her dance shoes and track on the floor. Does anyone have experience with this?
