Author: Patti, verbose tonight
Subject: Other countries have been dealing with these kinds of threats for years. I think we have lost our innocence and the sense that we were somehow protected from such acts. When I was on a hiking trip (walking holiday) in Ireland two years ago, the group was mostly Brits. They expressed surprise at seeing corner mailboxes; they had been removed in the UK years ago because terorists would put bombs in them. When we had free time in Killarney one day I suggested that we could stow our rucksacks in a locker in the train or bus station. They teased me for my naivete - "Oh Patti, they took lockers out of the stations years ago." Bombs placement issues again. We have been very sheltered and it is a big adjustment. When I lived in LA, I used to see a similar inability to function in some people after big quakes. A percentage of people do not function well after emergencies. (Of course I don't mean to minimize the loss to those directly affected by the attacks.)
In reply to: Patti - Hello all! 's message, "I figure the chance of contracting anthrax is probably about the same as being struck by lightening....yeah, it could happen, but you don't go around worried about it every day. People *are* overreacting. (An older black woman walked in the County Health Dept up the street frantic that she had been sent anthrax in the mail. Why did she think she had been targeted? Because she saw it on the news.) Media coverage reminds me of when we had the Tylenol tampering cases years ago - major press coverage over 6 deaths." on 02:30:15 11/08/01 Thu

  • By the way, I was green with envy to read that certain individuals got to see Eddie when Cat's Meow was shown in LA. So did Bobby go too or was it "Girls' Night Out"? (Spoot - Give my regards to Bobby.) (NT) -- Patti, 03:01:36 11/08/01 Thu
  • Hi Patti how great to see you again! Yeah it was fantastic to see him in LA, just a few blocks from the Henry Fonda Theatre. It was pure joy, in an odd way, it was better than some of the Circle tour, he was so relaxed and seemed happy. As for our reaction to all this, yes, it was a wake up call but an awful lot of people rather just go on sleeping. We need calm and intelligent leadership now, instead of hype and bluster, but I am getting the feeling more and more that nobody in power knows what to do right now. I know what to do though, just go on with my life, pay bills, go traveling, play with my kitties, and dream of Eddie. (NT) -- spoot waving at her namesake!, 03:14:32 11/08/01 Thu
