Okay I'm gonna start using this board to just vent coz it's safe, no one comes here so I can deposit some spewed rants and not get people all in a twist.

this weekend Moira and I were reminiscing about the old days of the board and how we used to gather and have so much fun, there used to be little word games, and virtual parties and also some very deep discussions and no matter who showed up, whether they were 13 year old kids or single moms or grannies or whatever, we all pretty much just lived together on that board. It was such a special refuge and such a special place.

Of course it couldn't stay the same and somehow it did change, people got driven away and others moved on to other things, and the ties loosened I guess.

But I hate how judgemental it is lately, sometimes just full of bile and bitchiness, it's not such a refuge anymore. I know everybody is still lurking but we don't connect anymore, coz our lives and schedules have taken us elsewhere, but I still feel sad.

I guess it's just something to adjust to...but I hate it.

Weeel, revoltin' developments, eh, Spoot? Hopefully we'll be able to head it off at the pass, with some petitioning and getting Congress to stand on their hind legs for a change.

As to comments below about newbies on the OB (three fellahs, specifically) - I can't help but feel that they sort of shut down whenever I'm around. Hope it ain't somethin' I SAID...I'm really rather harmless. As to the bit below (posted DONKEY's EARS ago...) about clothing bothering peoples - well, some folks set great store by what you look like, and that may not be fair, but it's reality. Sometimes reality stinks.

I have just been re-watching some Eddie interviews where he goes on about the Third Millennium and how gender identity is getting less and less important.........On Planet Izzard maybe, and I am flying there next week, but in the real world people post on his official board :

New Oval Soap is up on the Borkowski site. Apparently Eddie is riding horses in Blueberry(one would expect that, but I just hadn't thought about it). Fortunately he has his Iceland pony "tachkting" experience. I think this movie is going to be some fun. I would love to see areas in Mexico where it's being filmed, near the mountains in the states of Chihuahua, Durango, and Zacatecas. I bet it's beautiful. And the shaman, other world aspect of this movie, I'm interested in that part of it too, and how in depth they get into that. All sounds interesting.

- I am also very intrigued by this Shaman slant to the movie. I have a feeling the original comic novel didn't really have this mysticism, this is coming from the director's own fascination with the Indian wisdom. Has anyone read Carlos Castaneda's book from the sixties? I was addicted to the guy even though there was strong suspicion later on that it was all a fraud. But man, Eddie is moving further and further away from mainstream Hollywood! Bravo Eddie! I am so intrigued with this spaghetti western, it sounds like alot of fun for Eddie and I'm very, very curious where it's being filmed in Mexico and Spain to replicate the Superstition Mountains in Arizona. If you get on the Blueberry website it gives a bit more detail. I guess the shooting period is 21 weeks, starting April 8 in Mexico. Then 3 weeks in the UK in June for the indoor filming. So that will take Eddie through until September and then we'll see when Joe Egg is going to hit Broadway!

- Thanks so much for this article spooty, what a delightful read, it just felt right didn't it? I think there are a number of reasons for Eddie's current clothing choices which could include this jungian tv theory, plus Eddie's age and the fact that we realize what we lwear is so little of what we really are inside and we're so busy in life and careers that clothes have minimal importance, plus I think Eddie is so focused in this straight acting role that he'll do whatever he needs to achieve that, like not wear dresses for 5 years. But even with that, he's got to be somewhat sorted to be able to do that, so maybe he is at peace with his anima. BTW very happy you posted this on Eddie's board if by chance he wandered by and saw it, it would be a great read for him(if he could find it in all the rubbish!).. I had the good fortune to see Joe Egg twice last week and thought it was a fantastic play. A mixture of humor and poignancy, two people in an unbearably sad situation, each coping the best they can. As a pediatric nurse, I have seen families in similar situations many times. And in my early teens, I watched my own parents go through this experience. I thought the play was dead-on accurate in describing what people do to survive under these circumstances. The actors' portrayal was realistic (not like some plays where you can "see" the acting). There was one scene where Bri (Eddie's character) was listening to his wife discuss possible care options for the child and he looked so hopeful, only to have that hope taken away just a few minutes later. Found myself going "ohhhh".

After the play one night, I had the opportunity to tell Victoria Hamilton and Eddie how well I thought they had portrayed the roles. Victoria gave credit to Nichols (the author) who lived the experience. But we know who it was that brought his words to life!

If Joe Egg is going to be shown on UK telly, I hope there will be some way to get a copy.

So I've had the urge this past week to go back and reread that article "Of men, makeup, and fantasies....TV or not TV, that is the question" from 1999 after a conversation with a friend. This is one of my all time favorite Eddie articles. And I am just fascinated again I guess with the entire TV issue and specifically what is gratifying in the physical sexual act for a TV, depending ofcourse on what kind of TV one is. Eddie states in the article that his penis is immaterial and only uses it penetratively if the other woman is into it, but that it isn't necessary. But he doesn't really say for him, what he likes best, using the penis penetratively or not. I would guess that it depends on the moment and what he's feeling at the moment, etc. and since he does have the male physical equipment and testosterone pumping through him to a degree, plus this female side, I would think he might like both options, with penis, and without. So I was just wondering if anyone has read some article out there that I haven't where Eddie has elaborated more on this. This really isn't just an Eddie question, but really a TV question, about how TV's deal with this multi-gender but uni-physically sexual issue. Anyway this has been on my mind for days, so I'm throwing it out here.

I did read somewhere that many TVs are fully into the ordinary sexual practices at first with their lover, but as the relationship settles into a long term thing, the female partner loses her allure and the urge to crossdress returns, along with sexual fantasizing and self gratification. I have been angrily mulling this over ever since the reviews have come out for Joe Egg, and so bear with me as I go into this really esoteric subject that maybe nobody will even find the least bit interesting.

Most of the reviews correctly criticise Eddie's performance for not showing the desperation and despair behind his antic jokes and play acting, though I think it is not Eddie but the director who is responsible for this. But the thing that chaps my hide is that all the critics praise and admire Victoria Hamilton's Sheila for being the true heroine and heart of the play, as shown in this quote "she ... bears the play's sentimental moral alone. There's absolutely no laughing at the dogged tenacity of her optimism any more than there is laughing at her selfless devotion."

Well I don't think Peter Nichols meant to have Sheila's dedication to her barely living child be the moral core of the play. I think he wrote her to be tragic, trapped and blind. I think he created Bri to illustrate the need for letting life go when it's continuance becomes unbearable.

I found exerpts of Nichol's diary from that time. Ironically, he was just receiving world recognition for the play at the same time as his daughter was dying. The important difference between Peter and Bri was this, Peter's daughter was put away into an institution, because the family needed to let go and get on with the business of raising other children and he needed to have the space to create his body of work! Anyway here are clips out of that diary that illustrate so clearly Peter Nichol's feelings on his daughter's so-called life.

After breakfast, Thelma left to catch the Bristol train. Abigail nearly died last week and her ward sister asked Thelma to visit. There'd been no detectable pulse for some time and we hourly expected to hear of her death. Uncle Frank, the male nurse, was sent to see her and reported her to be pathetically wasted. We all hoped they wouldn't strive too officiously to keep her alive. ...

...Poor Abo, our parcel of faulty goods, lives on, despite repeated promises. The doctor who delivered her has never spoken to us from that day to this. The Euthanasia Bill, which I supported, was defeated in the Lords and the Times rejoiced....

November 11
For the Bristol home of Bri and Sheila [Joe's parents] in the Egg film, Medak has chosen Freeland Place, a choice Regency location, where only TV producers can afford to live. I went to see Van Eyssen of Columbia, and said it wasn't the best time to discuss the film rights of The National Health as I was very unhappy. He at once rang and ticked them off for prettifying the film. In the morning we heard from Hortham that Abigail's worse again. She can't last much longer, they say. So shall we go down tomorrow, sit by her bed and hope she won't recover yet again? No wonder I've written two plays about sickness and my latest TV play describes a funeral. She'll soon be nine, if she makes it.....

....We've decided not to visit again until we hear the good news that she's gone. This trip at least convinced Thelma we can't have her home. She can't even bear being moved a few inches but must lie there being fed and bathed and revived by drugs and brandy (yes!) until the mechanism finally overcomes their cruel and crazy efforts to keep it working. Someone give me permission and a painless sedative and I'll kill her without a qualm......

May 8 1971
Lovely day. Tennis with [Michael] Frayn at Ranger's House, then with Louise in our garden. A friend came with his son and daughter to watch the Cup Final. Then Bristol hospital was on the line. Not another crisis? It wasn't likely, I thought, as they hadn't bothered us with false alarms for some time now.
"Hullo?"
"Are you Mister Nichols, the father of Abigail Nichols?"
"Yes."
"Well, I'm sorry to have to inform you that she passed away peacefully at half-past six this evening."......

......We sat in a dazed mood, rang our parents, decided to tell the Frayns and Woods. Thelma suggested putting a notice in the Times. I asked whatever for, as no one knew her, and then only as a disaster. Even we knew only what we'd invented, a personality based on accidental gestures and reflexes. We comforted ourselves with the thought that her state had helped us understand each other and strengthened our marriage. Deepened it even. She dies obscurely, this well-known invalid who had smiled a few times, cried a great deal, never learnt to sit up. Her death had been postponed 11 years by drugs, her fits suppressed, those outward signs of her inner chaos....

....During one of our visits to Hortham, I'd asked a nurse if it wouldn't be kinder to let her die.
"But she's a holy innocent," she replied, with a smile so sanctimonious I could have hit her....

  - Hi BZC, yeah the other reviews didn't put it quite so plainly but it was implied that Victoria's Sheila was the most powerful performance in the company which means, I feel, that the focus of the production is off. In my mind, I keep re-directing certain scenes to show less comedy and more tension, more of that sick feeling of knowing that there is no good answer to this couple's dilemna. I would love to see the audiences walk out of the theatre totally lost in their own deep thoughts and feelings. Of course that is not what makes a big commercial success but I think Peter Nichols would be gratified. - As I have posted elsewhere, I think that Eddie can be an actor - but he has to "tone it down a bit" and not be expecting the lead roles. He will make a fine character actor. I have yet to see anything of his that could really be characterized as real dramatic acting yet, but my read on the Joe Egg thing is one of an "uneven" performance - some nights he's good, other nights...mmm.   - I think he's still taking baby steps in his acting, mostly because he is not confident and sometimes gets tentative in his approach instead of going full bore. But he said he was crap at comedy when he first started and it took years before he knew his craft. - I agree with the comment about Eddie needing to chase the lead roles less. He's not a natural lead, physically or otherwise. He's still too self-conscious as an actor and I think he finds it difficult being on stage with other people and reacting to them as people, rather than just as an audience. He comes into his own when interacting with an audience. Pride gets in the way of him starting properly at the bottom with acting. But it interests me to see him act, because there IS such potential there. I just don't think he'll ever get the space to breathe with it as other comedians have in straight roles, he's too big and simulataneously too "small" in celebrity terms. If I ever get to interview him, one of the questions I would ask would be how he finds film acting, because there isn't the energy of the audience to bounce off and give him adrenaline and truth (click) -- Penny, 14:49:08 12/26/01 Wed
  - Hi Penny! yeah I wonder if Eddie wants to do film because he's a film nut and just wants to do it, or if he really wants to tell the story. A good film actor must know exactly what each scene is, how it furthers the story, what the characters are doing on the surface level and what they are doing underneath. In a good movie there is so much going on in a scene, and I get the feeling he isn't always totally prepared. Well I worked very late last night, until 2:00AM, and then I took a lawn chair out to my front walkway and sat down in the darkness and lay my head on the chair pillows and watched the sky fall!

I thought it was gonna be lots of falling stars all at once, like I once saw in New Mexico years ago, but instead they mostly came one at time, a few seconds apart, or at the most two at once.

But the intensity! Each one shot across the sky, leaving a brilliant white hot trail behind, so fast, they were like bullets in the water. Some of the trails were not so straight, as if the burning particle was spinning and wobbling in its trajectory. The trails were like plumes, white and feathery, always traveling from west to east. There were light wisps of clouds in the skies, and it almost seemed that the dissipating trails had created them.

Some were so bright and spectacular they drew unbidden cries from my throat. And I swear when one shot through the sky, I heard the whistling shriek of rocket fire.
