Bush is no Hitler. He doesn't have the brains.

He's the sap chosen by the Corporate State to keep us all comfortable with our busy little lives, buying useless gadgets, watching television and movies with similar plotlines (where everything Turns Out All Right), absorbing "news" owned by one of Three Major Corporations (no, sorry, spoot, even PBS didnt report on the troubles that ADM got into), driving our preposterously overpriced cars, using incredibly overpriced gas...little houses, made of ticky-tacky...

Who was surprised that gas prices went up (when world oil prices are going down), after installing two former oil-men in office? Record profits by oil companies? who knew? Show of hands, please...anyone? anyone?

There is a growing chasm in American society, largely ignored - the poor are staying poor, while the "middle class" gets rich (by global standards) - no, I advocate no Luddite schemes, but this is the classic revolutionary scenario. You and I have one of the instruments of that chasm right beneath our fingertips - when you sweat a 25% increase in transportation cost (gas prices again) because you have to cut into food and rent money, you really arent thinking about the next software upgrade. But, who's really SEEN a poor person, really? Mr. Reagan told us that there are no poor people HERE....

No, Bush is no Hitler, he's more the clown act, meant to distract while the scenery is changed. Like the scene in Dr. Zhivago, we're all having fun at the dance, while the Palace Guard mows down them who needs bread (in a figurative, non-violent, sanitized, G-rated sort of way, of course). No, you don't see any signs of starvation, and no real privation. The soma in every household is that glowing electric box, assuring everyone that if your whites were whiter, you would have a happy life. We are all in the mode of ACCEPTING what we are given - acceptance of mediocrity or worse. Try complaining about something that you bought that broke - feel like a fool? Feel like a whiner? Feel like you're swimming against the current? Why do we blindly accept it when "customer service" takes weeks to respond, but the money is charged to your credit card in an instant?

Do I sound paranoid? I assure you, I have no canned goods stored away in a bunker, I buy gas, I buy useless widgets, I drive a hideously overpriced car and pollute, I have not one, but several computers, I have a majik box in my air-conditioned living room that stays on more than it should, and I have a ticky-tacky house, too. But I think, and can't help but wonder.

The Japanese, after enduring us for years, are fomenting to throw the US military out of Okinawa, because of yet another stupid ugly incident with the local folk we're "protecting."

Ah...Empire no more.

- Yeah Gummy! You said it right, our society is not oppressive and bleak like Orwell's 1984, it's the anesthetized, sterilized, drone but happy life of Huxley's Brave New World. Everything is disappearing without notice, how many songbirds do you hear anymore? Would you eat a fish caught off the Santa Monica pier as they used to do thirty years ago? Instead of the sound of crickets on the front porch, we are all in our air conditioned houses, watching television. And for me there is a fear that a lifetime of work and saving and planning will be swept away in hard times.   - I keep feeling as if our lives are getting ever busier, we are feeling more and more stressed and that there is a reason for that. It's like we are all on treadmills and somebody keeps incrementally increasing the pace and we're all so frantic to keep at it that we don't question why. AND THAT'S THE POINT. No questions wanted from the rabble. My hubby was talking to his brother about our dream of moving to Italy and his brother said, "There's nothing to do there". That's sounds like bliss! Movie magic. Eddie aspiring to create through movies, hoping for wide-open expression.

Humans have visual persistance--we retain images. And the Phi Phenomenon allows us to fill in the spaces of movement.
And so, moving pictures.

Where's all this going? Just, maybe Life iz like the movies; we perceive light-our imaginations- and keep it moving.

Eddie sparkles! and is allovertheplace, and thinks Big.He's a movie in himself. And I feel we truly have a role.

I just viewed an exhibit of Annie Liebowitz' photos of women.
Most didn't appear female,primarily.
Miners,farmers,athletes, very old bodies.

Mostly what you see/feel is the eyes, and textures, and strengths.

So little is described by form anymore;the variations are vast--man,woman,condition,projection--Heart-Soul.

So all this play about Eddie's appearance and accoutrements.Jeez,I do it too.But I think the intrigue is the Idea that all that is just play; it's not even possible for form to be in a static state. So we are seeking what's beneath by searching the form for truth--and realizing it's not there.

How delightful to have Eddie as our guide in this!

And maybe Eddie,like other TG/bio men is trying to access all parts of his potential,with the femme expression

Okay I feel Eddie is a bit confused about the film biz and may suffer some frustration as a result. I think he still has that childhood dream of being Steve McQueen in jeans and a t-shirt zooming along in a totally cool way on the motorbike to Switzerland. So his dream is to be in one of those big action Hollywood movies which makes everybody eat too much popcorn and handbags with bricks in them.

Two things wrong with that.

1. He isn't action leading man material in my opinion. His acting skills do not include muscly moves and macho stuff. I thought in Circus, he looked very girly when he was trying to menace John Hannah with that knife. He would ace that Steve MeQueen lopsided grin though, I feel. But those roles are gonna go to Russell Crowe. (somebody pick up Mimi off the floor)

2. More to the point, Hollywood doesn't make those kinds of movies anymore. They made crap. Fast action, loud, pointless crap. I mean if Van Damme and the Rock can be movie stars, geez...

The parts that Eddie is suited for are in the indie film world, though I fear he sees them as 'Room with a View and a Staircase and a Pond'. But if he avoids Merchant Ivory, I think it is there that he can find the more interesting roles and movies, and his contacts such as Alan Rickman, Dafoe, Helen Bonham Carter, David Mamet etc should be able to help him find a way to get a chance at those projects.

For a guy like him, who is used to total control over his work, who can book himself a tour in an instant, it must be hard to adapt to the film biz. There the work is so collaborative and your performance and the quality of the film itself depends on everybody else doing their jobs well. And then after the movie is made, it is at the mercy of distribution deals and studio politics. It's such a crap shoot and a miracle when a movie jells and everything falls into place. And even if you make it big, you never stay there, one bomb and your phone doesn't ring.

My advise to Eddie, go do what Alan Cummings and Jennifer Jason Leigh just did, what Ethan Fromme did, what Billy Bob Thornton did, write your own script, and get your friends together and make your own small movie. It's as close as you can get to your own gig and still be in the film business.

Oh well that's my dream for Eddie, I'm rooting for him all the way.

I know some of you have spoken about Eddie and his acting career, and I agree it is difficult move for him but it's one of his childhood dreams and I think he is seriously making some good moves towards it. In interviews he's mentioned that in the films he's been in so far he hasn't been happy with, that has been confirmed when I've spoken to Chris Johnson ('The Criminal'), Mr I, is still at an early stage of building up his own confidence in his acting abilities and we both agreed maybe some support (not in a sicafanctic way) and encouragement, on the board or something. It must be even more of a leap for him, specially when he's surrounded by pro. actors that have been to drama school and all that. His roles are improving, but I think he's gotta find scripts that don't contain 'Izzard' type material or pointers - ie. the beesexual line in All The Queen's Men and other bits and pieces that have popped up, just so that people can focus on his acting for that moment when he's onscreen. I think it's that short attention/putting people into boxes and labelling them kind of thing.

I say push the boundaries make the box a little more plush and fit it with hinges so you can push the flaps down for more manouvres

On the TV debate, vrai or faux, I don't think you'd make up something like that just for him to get into showbiz, I feel the stereotyping thing has occurred in many of the interviews he's taken part in and ppl don't seem to be able to move on, if he's in blokey mode or make-up mode, he never seems to be able to win, except with the fans. I think some ppl think because you're TV it means that you must wear make-up all the time, but that's not true at all, and ppl should respect that a little more.

To me, Eddie is the funniest man in the world,but not the greatest actor.As soon as he gets comedy stardom, he wants more.........I respect his desire to chase the Hollywood Dream,but he has already had to sacrifice part of his personality to do it.

I'd prefer to see him in supporting and minor roles representing the TG community, then one day........

if mr i just went there and did what he does best.and was him/herself wouldnt it catch on....the reason i ask is the question of why he is staying in a certain way of dressing right now....i know he must dress anyway he wants we do dont we....and i dont even except it as blokey mode its just a style...it just seems that when anything is afoot he does dress in a certain way...and i wondered if he is trying to convince someone he can be blokey...i could be wrong....what do you think and if you have talked this to death please excuse me its my first time here(euwwwwwwww)

- ...maybe it's a case of when in Rome, do as the romans do, but in this case it concerns clothing. And as Moira says not that Eddie's choice in clothing right now has anything to do with gender, but an appropriate style for the situation he's in. I always wear long trousers for fieldwork, anything else would be impractical, and maybe that's what Eddie is doing, he's focused on the work and the gender is irrelevant to the work so the focus has been pulled away from it.... - Howdy moira, spoot, and Magenta! Here's an absolutely crazy thought...tickle me silly if it's rubbish, but, humour me for just a moment. A guy in a dress...yes, that does challenge certain perceptions about society and the way things are "supposed" to be. A guy who easily wears dresses when he feels like it, who then chooses to go blokey...now there's a new mind feck. I think those of us who've been fans for some time now have come to accept that it's perfectly natural for a guy to go femme if he chooses, but seeing Eddie go bloke sends us all (okay, most) in a titter (pardon the pun). Well I remember last spring when he started his tour with beard and black levis and everybody was asking him, Eddie, where's the dress and he was testy and said he came out of one box, the blokey box, only to be put in another box, so he just wants to mix it up again. Well for sure he doesn't want to be cast as a TV or drag queen, not many of those roles, although he DID do that one with Matt LeBlanc. So I was so overjoyed to come home to some great posts on this board....lovely to see Magenta, thanks to Dorene for the kind words, loved Spoots and gummy's history chat(you two and Moira need to hook up someday!), Bin's great young mind, Taya's always! lovely in depth thoughts, Teri's equally thought provoking comments, Cro's mind bending contributions that I still will have to read, and everyone else I haven't chatted with before that have made fantastic contributions here. I'm in love with this place already, and if Eddie's new messageboard doesn't broaden abit, sorry but you're stuck with me from time to time.

So...what is exactly going on? Eddie interviews for this new movie right after the AI gig and gets the part? What does this mean? Spoot is the actor's strike going through in Hollywood at the end of the month or what? And this new Izzard.com messageboard...what is this all about? Seems so restrictive somehow. I hope Eddie's ok, I feel a bit worried for him. Can anyone enlighten me at all? And Poule if you happen to be lurking or jogging by, again what was it that Eddie said when you asked him what he was doing next?

I always love your posts Taya...I think we are all drawn to certain individuals, connections per se, for whatever reasons, most likely reasons we'll never understand, but I say just go with it and if you're respectul of the other person, your own good sense will draw the line on what is ok and what is extreme...for the most part I don't think Eddie puts limits on how we perceive him or appreciate him or whatever, he allows us to have our own experience over him in whatever way we see fit. Read the post below concerning "male" and "female" qualities. Still coagulating on that a bit, but seems to me that there are these qualities to be found in Human Beings in general - and I mean both the positive and negative. Think Ghandi, and then think Mama Borgia. There are good and bad people all over the spectrum - to classify some aspects of human personality as "female" or "male" is inherently sexist. Sorry, ladies.

Amy and I were discussing Glenda Jackson a bit back - and so naturally, Elizabeth I comes up in my mind...definately a female, and characterized in her time as the archetype "Virgin Queen" - but ruled England as her father never could. This was not because she was a woman, a woman acting like a man, or any other permutation - she was Political. No case to be made about "dominant" males in that situation.

In recent history we have Jimmy Carter - a good man, with good intentions, but not "dominant" - and I wouldnt classify him as "femme" either (you don't survive, let alone get promoted, in our fine U.S. Navy being submissive). His problem in ruling was what I call "paralysis through analysis" - and taking on too much all at once.

Another, more complicaed example from history is one of Elizabeth's successors - Charles I. (I can go on and on with this one, so I'll try to make it short)...Charles was brought up to be King. He was a mixed bag, authoritatively, tho - dominant in all the wrong ways (unwilling to compromise, tending to view his own voice as absolute), and submissive in the wrong ways, too (tending to view situations as "fate" rather than something that could be changed). Look where he ended up (not quite in a ditch, covered in petrol, but he lost track of his head...)

ANYways - I really dont think that there are any ways of classifying folk as "female" or "male" personalities - one is brought up in a certain mind/gender set, usually for obvious reasons. Its that annoying human capacity to make decisions that usually messes up the convenient predictable outcome.

Lately Lyn's yahoo treehouse thingy has been abuzz with Izzardite ramblings about whether Eddie is a fake TV or not and them somebody on Mrs. B's board was desperately asking why oh why does Eddie make her so obsessed with him. It's a pretty strange phenomemon isn't it? We know it has a teenybopper sort of element to it and most of us are far too mature and worldly for that so it is something we struggle with.

Okay this is sort of not really a knitted together theory but bits of it seem to float about in my head and I want to write it down so they stop distracting me. You know there are lots of signals out there that keep reminding us of THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE. Whether it's the Christian Right banging on about sins and corrupting influences, or the Radical Left telling us what's evil and exploitative about White Men or The Corporate State, or just your family always tell you how you are supposed to feel. It's always there setting up a structure, a set of rules, a conventional wisdom, something that defines and categorises everything and makes it dogma.

Then there is Eddie who doesn't rebel against society's rules but simply acts as though they don't exist. He breaks the gender rules obviously, not by porclaiming his TV, marching and shouting, but by making it seem so silly to even worry about it. He does it more subtly in comedy, doing an act so unique that he reminds you of no one else, whereas most standups tell the same types of jokes and behave in the same manic or ranting way. And in his material he deconstructs every human thing, seeing it all with a bright child's eyes, never letting established orders and categories stop his mind from wandering but going at will from Jihads to cake or death to Church of England Airlines, all of it possible in a mind without restraint.

I sometimes think I see in his eyes an invitation, see the world as I see it, or better yet, see the world the way you will see it, if you can free your mind from all those rules you absorbed without question.

He is a real danger because his mind is always questioning and that can be dangerous to social order. It's not that he has the Answer, it's that he questions all answers. I don't know if he really does that but that's the tune I hear coming from his siren song.

Sometimes I think of him and I remember another man, though they are totally different. Another small shy man with dreams and passion, Robert Kennedy. His motto was - Some people see things as they are and say why. I dream things
that never were and say why not?"

Well that's all. Sorry if I got all soapy and stuff but I love Eddie so much that sometimes it just all spills out in a flood. Kisses to all!

"Torture Based On Sexual Identity - An Unacknowledged Global Shame"

Tortured, ill-treated, sexually assaulted, forcibly subjected to medical or psychiatric treatment, forced to flee their home countries in terror -- the world over, lesbians, gay men, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are at particular risk of human rights violations because of their sexual identity, Amnesty International said today.

In a new report launched today the organization describes the plight of the thousands of people who are tortured and ill-treated because their real or perceived sexuality is seen as threatening social order. The report includes documented examples from some 30 countries, but the full extent of the problem is undoubtedly much larger. In over 70 countries same-sex relations are considered a crime, and in some instances they incur the death penalty.

"Despite being a widespread occurrence across continents and cultures, the torture and ill-treatment suffered by LGBT people is surrounded by a conspiracy of silence," Amnesty International said, stressing that this is due to the social stigma often attached to homosexuality and transsexuality.

Generalised tolerance of abuses against LGBT people, fear of retaliation and reluctance by the victims to gain exposure, are some of the factors contributing to this silence. Incidents of sexual identity-based ill-treatment remain largely unreported and under investigated, and those responsible are seldom brought to justice.

Alongside the heightened risk of torture and ill-treatment LGBT people run at the hands of state agents in police stations and prisons, they are also vulnerable to physical and psychological violence -- often amounting to torture -- in the community and even in the family. The prevalence of sexism and homophobia in society means that lesbians are at particular risk of abuse, including being forced into marriage or sexual relationships with men.

"While some governments take an active role in fuelling homophobic violence in society through inflammatory statements and institutionalised discrimination, many more share responsibility for it through lack of action," A�

Be Aware - I just attempted a visit there, and was greeted by a vast and speedy attempt to suck the contents of my computer hard drive into some unknown black hole. My virus protection package said "Oy, hang on a minute!" and closed my internet connection. I was provided in return with a large number of "cookies" which were isolated and destroyed.

One may want to stay away for a bit - seems theyre victim of hackers again.

- Global Warming is a con. They only have recorded the temperatures for a little over 100 years. Just a quickie-

Was just watching a few minutes of Bravo- its some sort of "Out of the closet" week, and they were showing the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in.. uhh.. shit.. Papau New Guinea maybe? Sorry, not exactly sure where. Anyways! I caught a bit, and suddenly I saw the We Know Where you Live, Live LOGO. Well, the Amnesty Logo.. so I turned up the volume and heard them talk about the "upcoming July 2001" televised show from Amnesty. No mention of Eddie, or sight of him, but there were at least 100 people wearing the Amnesty shirts, marching in this Mardi Gras parade. Cooool. Gay and Lesbian rights=Human Rights.

She's homebound a lot with a toddler and has been looking for inspiration. She felt silly telling me she has a thing for fairies. She finds them magical and other wordly.

So I suggested that it's quite sane.I/we have a FEW things for Eddie, because he's magical--and very human.And I said that it seems humans are drawn to almost-human creatures that have paranormal powers.

Like we are drawn to movie stars, who are bigger than life and capable of unlimited appearances and actions in movies.

So for her the fairy thing could be her particular catalyst for inspiration and change. As Eddie is for us. He's become something more than a performer, or we have created him that way to ourselves--and run with it!

Then she and I talked about creating one's self, how you need to go back and remember the child who hid itself at age 4-7; who then became more what the world was telling it to be, and how you need to comfort it and bring it forward--intact.(in her case the child who believed in fairies)

Because we all know what we really feel and who we really are, we've just saved it away? If we don't resurrect the unlimited,wide-open child and be true to ourselves the world will never change.

So Eddie and other magical beings are great hope for change and for being true to one's self.He has no fear, he's a dreamer with a childlike feeling, and a fighter for truth.

Do people believe there are MOLDS of us, that there are only a certain number of types of people? It's weird, because we can all argue that we are all different, and we can all argue that we are the same.

Where am I going? Oh yes... so how many people are there in the world with the same deliciousness (inside AND out) as Eddie? Any? Or is he one of a kind. Hmmm.

- Howdy Bin! I've been thinking about this a lot, lately (no really, I have!). I think it could be a combination of both - that there are certain characteristics that instantly draw certain types of people, and the right combination of those characteristics can be magical (ooh, she's using the "M" word again ;). My newest "obsession" is F1 racing, specifically Jacques Villeneuve. He's cute, but not terribly so...what drew me to him were qualities that bear a striking resemblence to Eddie - overcoming tragedy (his father, also a race car driver, was killed when he was 11), a healthy balance between ego and humility, a creative, soulful, and yet playful nature, and an absolute refusal to play by anyone else's rules but his own. Oh yeah, he can also speak four languages and is obsessed with computers and gadgets. I can respect a guy like that, the same way I respect Eddie.
