  I was talking to another Izzardite about a feeling of malaise I've been feeling, since Eddie's gone out of view. I think other Izzardites might be suffering the same blues. And it occurred to me...you know we might be addicted to the adrenaline of new things happening that we got used to during 99-00, or that we first felt when we found this incredible human being. I used to log on every day on the Izzard board and there was always something funny or interesting going on. There was so much buzz then, not just about Eddie, but I guess it was all new to us, and we were so jazzed to hook up with others with the exact same heads.
  
  So now we are like old junkies, the thrill ain't there any more but the addiction still got that hold on us. I keep looking for a fix, something to ease the jones for anything new.
  
  Can one be addicted to Izzard and to Izzardites? Isn't it the strangest thing? It feels more real than real life. I know I sometimes frustrate my husband, who feels I am absent, and he feels kind of abandoned. There is a kernel of truth to that. I don't mean it but my mind is always wondering if there's something new on my bookmarked sites.
  
  I keep thinking of the Pied Piper of Hamlin, luring all the children away.

As for my husband...he's used to my obsessions by now (or at least he should be) and plays along with me.   • A different perspective perhaps - I view this whole thing as having EXPANDED a circle - I now know or am conversant with folk all over the globe - and I have gotten involved in projects the previously I would have walked away from (website for younguns fooseball team, for example) - I have learned many things, heard others, confirmed yet some other things.   • As someone still relatively new to the world of Izz, it's kind of a moot point. Where Edz is like an addiction to those of you who were around when there was news and happenings, he's more of a mythology to those of us who have never actually been around when he was doing tours and interviews and such. So for me, the appeal of Izzard and the appeal of the Izzardites are two very different spheres. I think when Edz does come back and become more "high profile", if anything it'll be more of a shock, like Howard Hughes suddenly making a guest appearance on Hollywood Squares or something... Apparently about 7% of the population in the U.S. of A. (about 19 MILLION people) believe this. A FEATURE STORY.

          • I have heard the “fake photo” idea – what folk don’t realize is that about a thousand dollars were spent to make a flag pole out of materials light enough for the LEM, and as mission planners recognized that there was no air on the moon, a flag hanging there limp was no fun at all. A pole was inserted across the top of the flag, and hinged to the flagpole, to create the illusion that the flag was “flying” in a breeze. Why do we seek the most complicated, conspiratorial reasons for things, when a very simple, open explanation is much more likely?   I've been thinking alot lately about the concept of time, that intangible element whose passage is marked by children growing up and changing of the seasons. It's something so important(vital) in our lives yet we can't really grasp it. Even looking into the mirror and viewing an aging face is an illusion, because underneath is the wondering child, full of hope and exploration. And when I view Eddie, I see 40 years of a person's life, with the adult on the outside, but the child shines from within, inviting us out for a run. I've only had a handfull of people in my life that I feel as if I can truly run free with....Eddie's one of them. My mind and heart can run free, and the child and adult in me become one. It's good energy, the energy of 40 plus years, alot of time, flowing as one. No wonder I continue to be drawn to this bundle of glorious time that is Eddie...great energy....

  I listen to a radio program called This American Life on public radio. It's a collection of essays, or audio documentaries by various people, usually profiles or memoirs of different people in all sorts of situations in America.
  
  Tonight it was a two part show. The first was on Teenage Transgender boys hanging at a drag club on Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood, a city in the LA area which is a haven for gays. The reporter, a woman who is writing a book about the TG scene in LA, followed a couple on femme boys as they lived and played on the streets, often hustling sex for money, getting hormones on the black market and dosing themselves to get breasts and curves. She profiled two especially, Foxxjazel, who at 21 is sort of the elder matron of the club, and Ariel, a slight teenager who is just now beginning to explore her TS feelings. She interviewed them with great skill and delicacy and it was a beautiful show.
  
  The other was a journal written by a man who was a fan of Bruce Campbell, the great actor in the Sam Raimi Night of the Living Dead series. The writer, a not very successful literary agent, told about loving Bruce, logging on to the internet and finding all these fans and fansites of the actor, but one of the sites was created by Bruce himself and he often contributed pieces and wrote bulletins for the fans, and incredibly, also had his email address on the site. The writer hesitated for a long time, but finally broke down and wrote an email to Bruce, offering his services as an agent in case he ever wanted to write a book. He never expected to hear anything but the actor wrote him back and after some four years, he finally got Bruce's autobiography published. In those four years he ended up spending a lot of time with Bruce, lots of meetings, lots of hanging out. And the whole time, he never lost his sense of being a geeky fan that had the miraculous fortune of helping his idol fulfull his dream and of just plain hanging out with him as well. Every fan's wish come true.
  
  Both stories so acutely reminded me of Eddie, the whole hour should have been called Rhapsody in the Key of Iz. Seemed like magic, but they never mentioned Eddie's name, not once.

  • Heheheh - interesting that the Post article makes reference to the exact neighborhood in which I work - yes, the area is "in transition" - behind our brand spanking new office building here on M street is some of the remaining "Project" housing from the early 60s. We understand that D.C. "cleaned up" the neighborhood prior to our arrival, but we have still been advised by D.C. Police to not stay here after dark....delightful.   Well, it does seem that Eddie has had his fill of publicity and fans for the moment and is focusing all of his energy now on film roles and learning how to act more proficiently, etc. He is keeping a very low profile it seems. Though selfishly it is hard not seeing or hearing bits about him, I bet this time for Eddie is good for him personally, to regroup and re-evaluate where he's at, most likely in both personal areas and career. It must be a relief in certain ways, to simplify and focus all his energy into a few areas...I certainly wish him all the success he deserves, and I think over time, he will obtain the greatness in acting that he has in comedy, it will just take some time finding his niche. But I think Eddie is gifted and special enough, that it may be a bit, but that day too will come when Eddie will achieve his biggest dream and that's being recognized for his acting abilities. My point...well I really have none, just my thoughts lately while out working on the plains in wetlands, Eddie's drive and talent will get him where he wants over time...I have faith of that....thanks spooty for the space to ramble...

  Well all my lovely friends are either traipsing around London or away on work or vacation *sob* and this board is getting cobwebs. Of course if even the hostess neglects it what can one do? Well I haven't had any musings about Eddie going on in my head or even much on politics or religion either. So this will have to do.
  
  My hubby and I were at an afternoon get together with some rather new friends, eating and drinking and chatting and we started talking about the internet and one of the women said they just recently got their computer back and she hoped she wouldn't get back to her addiction to email. And I mentioned my addiction to the internet and then tried to explain about the message board and my internet friends and then started to explain about Eddie Izzard and the host said Oh yes, I saw him on HBO and he's brilliant. The guy said he had avoided watching at first because of the makeup but when he did he was so happily surprised and watched him again and then made his wife watch. He and his wife waxed on and on about his rare talent and intelligence for about ten minutes. I didn't have to say much at all. Everybody else was like, oh really? Well we have to sign up for HBO then, etc.
  
  It's really surprising how many people know and love Eddie, but you don't know it because he is not in the media. He is the classic underground star. I bet Hollywood has no idea.

  As I get ready to head on to our cabin vacation, I am comforted by the thought that though there is no television reception up there, we can bring our tv/vcr thingy - and that means *I* can bring some Eddie tapes!!! (Since it's too quiet there for me to really sleep, and then when I DO hear noises, I wish I *wasn't* hearing them.) The tapes help me pass a few hours 'till the sun starts coming up - THEN, I can sleep - at least for a bit before the kiddies and the hubster wake up. Thankfully, Hubby can sleep through Eddie's voice, and my laughter shaking the bed. (I've tired him out WAY before then.)
  
  SO...my point?
  
  Since I can find release, laughter, solace, all these things and more, in Eddie humor (of course, I can find all these here in board kingdom, but THAT isn't possible in bear kingdom at this time), it made me think about Eddie, and when he wants to *get away from it all* - though the IT in question is entirely different, I really hope he has someone (or more), some thing(s), on which he can rely, to bring HIM release, laughter, solace, etc, etc, etc. After all, he absolutely deserves this, with all the wonderful friendships, happiness, and myriad of things that he brings to us all!
  
  Tonight we're going to a concert, and then the wilderness adventure begins (hey, I'm a city girl - it's *still* an adventure, though I've been doing this for many years).
  
  So guys, until I return, enjoy, be happy, babble endlessly for me...love you all!

  House Panel Passes Anti-Cloning Bill
  WASHINGTON (AP) - The House Judiciary Committee advanced a bill Tuesday that would prohibit human cloning, following a lengthy debate that also delved into stem cell research.
  
  In passing the bill 18-11, lawmakers said they wanted to keep scientists from applying the same technique on humans that was used to clone Dolly the sheep in 1997. The measure now goes before the full House.
  
  Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson praised the committee, saying its action puts Congress on the right track toward prohibiting the cloning of human beings.
  
  ``Supporting medical research to combat human disease and infirmity is immensely important to this administration,'' he said. ``However, science does not and cannot proceed in a moral vacuum. The ethical issues posed by human cloning and the implications for the child creates are particularly troubling.''
  
  But as the cloning bill has moved through the House, a debate has arisen over stem cell research.
  
  President Bush will soon decide whether to permit federal funds for medical research on stem cells pulled from human embryos. Just Monday, Pope John Paul II urged Bush to reject the idea.
  
  As the president has grappled with his decision, so have lawmakers, including many staunch anti-abortion Republicans. In recent weeks, some - like Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah - have announced their support for stem cell research.
  
  Thursday in the House, many Democrats voiced concern that an outright ban on human cloning would also prohibit stem cell and other types of research.
  
  ``This may be known as the point in the meeting this morning when we try to play doctor and that's bad for American patients,'' said Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the leading Democrat on the committee. ``This would stop ongoing studies designed to help people (that are) suffering.''
  
  Republican members said action is needed before science advances to the point where humans are cloned. They said the bill only affects human cloning and does not restrict the use of cloning technology to produce molecules, DNA, cells other than human embryos, tissues, organs, plants or animals other than humans.
  
  Stem cells are building blocks for all human tissue. The most versatile cells are derived from embryos discarded at fertility clinics, but some abortion opponents say it is wrong to use them for research.
  
  Opponents of the bill argued that the use of cloning technology to create embryos for research purposes should be allowed.
  
  The Biotechnology Industry Association voiced its opposition to the bill in a letter to committee members that stated, ``Cloning techniques in research are integral to the production of breakthrough medicines, diagnostics and vaccines to treat heart attacks, various cancers, Alzheimer's, diabetes, hepatitis and other diseases.''
  
  The cloning research could also produce replacement skin, cartilage and bone tissue for burn and accident victims, the industry said.
  
  ``In addition to shutting the door on important research, (the bill) will limit patients' access to possibly life saving products,'' the industry said.
  
  For some, the debate became emotional. ``An embryo is human life. It is not a speck of dust,'' said Rep. Henry Hyde, an Illinois Republican and outspoken abortion foe. ``Is it appropriate to create human life in a petri dish and then destroy that life to get at a cell? I say no.''
  
  But Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat, retorted, ``An embryo is a clump of a few cells. How can you say to somebody who you could cure of a deadly disease 'we will not cure you because you are less important than a clump of cells.'''
  
  Democrats tried unsuccessfully several times during the hearing to offer amendments that would exempt research techniques from the ban.
  
  Meanwhile, the committee waded into another murky topic by passing by a voice vote a bill that would ensure that a fetus breathing when it leaves a mother's womb, even during an abortion procedure, would be treated as a person under federal law.
  
  Nadler and other Democrats had initially opposed the measure, saying it was an attempt to chip away at abortion rights enshrined in Roe v. Wade. Tuesday, Nadler told the committee, ``Whatever concerns anyone may have had that this might become some clever way to undermine the rights protected under Roe v. Wade have, I think, been addressed. ... I have little doubt that it will be passed without much controversy.''
  
  The Senate has already attached the measure to patients' rights legislation that passed earlier this month.

  I read Vex's plaintive post about her confusion over the goddam intensity of her obsession with Our Lady of the Bent Gender. I have to say it brought back memories! Once I got bitten with the Eddie bug, I was like the cat on the hot tin roof. I couldn't stand still, my mind was fevered, it felt like being possessed by a succubus, the pain of unrequited love was like a malady.
  
  I found after a while that the only way I could handle my condition was to write all my thoughts and feelings like a journal entry, and somehow seeing the words written down reduced the feelings to a managable size. And then I logged on to izzard.com and found out that other women were struggling with the same frustrating overwhelming syndrome!
  
  Now, two years later, though I'm still crazy about him and still muse on him daily, it is not so raging a fire, more like smoldering red embers.
  
  Where once I fought against it, felt my maturity and dignity was somehow at peril, felt freakish and sad, now I am grateful for the vitality and joy of life that this obsession has awakened in me and profoundly appreciative of the deep and true friends that I have found through this absurd magnificent obsession!

                  • Hmm, I can't say anything specific, I'd have to have memorized the Bible, which I haven't...but I don't think that he would have really *used* his sexuality - that would indicate a different intent - but I think he would have been attractive to some people in a sexual way, just like any other human being. The idea of being celibate comes from when he told the apostles to form the Church, and that they should not take wives, because the Church would be their "wife" - meaning that their lives would be dedicated exclusively to their beliefs, that having a wife would not allow them to be completely and fully dedicated. I remember when I saw Eddie in D2K and I came in on the Stonehenge bit and was immediately smitten and saying "who is this guy? Religion - something that was meant to help humans connect with each other and with "whatever" - is used to drive deep wedges between us.   No reply is required here...just wanted to get some thoughts down, because my brain is drowning with all these while I'm at home with the kiddies - they just wouldn't understand! LOL!
  
  Sometimes I find it really difficult to read how religion is put down, not in any particular forum, or by any particular person, but because it happens.
  
  I was brought up Roman Catholic ('allo, we're the Romans!)...which I'm not sure what the difference is between that and just those who follow the teachings of Cathol.... as you can tell, though I was brought up this way, I am in no way offended by Eddie's brand of religious humour - I think it's funny, really. I don't think he means it maliciously either, so it makes me kinda crazy when people get really insulted or upset by it - but hey, they are entitled.
  
  Though I in no way am following all the *rules* of my born-into religion, I think that's pretty impossible, for anyone but the Pope maybe...I DO find that religion is important in my life. I pray, I have a *favorite* saint, I enjoy when I do make the effort and get to Mass. There is something really beautiful and comforting to me in church, and I don't think I could ever completely turn my back. Maybe this is because of how I was brought up, because I see the difference between myself and my Hubby, who did not go to Catholic schools as I did, and therefore knows very little about, and therefore doesn't have quite as much of a connection with, religion; his parents went to church on Easter Sundays, he received the *required* sacraments, but didn't learn much about any of them. By now, I've forgotten lots of what we learned, despite the rulers being slapped on our hands by the nuns. What I do carry with me is the feeling that I can turn to whoever I want to pray to, and that it makes me feel comforted, when maybe no one else would be able to do that for me.
  
  Well, do I have a point? Maybe not. I don't see any religions as horrible - just the people who believe that their religion gives them the right to be hurtful or to hurt others. We can't control the religion we're born into, just like we can't control what color skin we are born with, or what country we are born in. Religion should be about love and caring, whatever the *supreme being* is; whether it's the Earth, a God or Godess, Nature, or any other name given to a loving power bigger than ourselves. Who can say this power is not ALL of these things?
  
  Religion is not the baddie here, it's the humans who decide that only their way is the right way.

  • Hmm. Interesting. I was born into a Jewish family, so I guess that means I'm jewish. Though I haven't studied allllll of the other religions, I agree with Judaism the most. (whatever that means). I don't however, even want to THINK about taking any of it literally. I'm not a religious person by any means- I am spiritual. I guess I sort of use my religion because I pick bits of it that I like, and disregard those I don't. Oh well. I see religion as both comforting and uniting, and dividing- VERY dividing. I like the traditions of my religion, the family and the recognition of certain prayers make me feel like I belong. But I don't know if I believe in "God" perse. I don't think I'll ever know what I believe in, except for the fact that I deeply belive that everything happens for a reason. What the reasons are, I don't know. I'm sure you all know by now that I don't believe in *god* as a larger than life entity..I think of it more like the souls that everyone has (does that make sense) I do envy those who take comfort in church...I was baptised Russian Orthodox(or some Russian thing..I must ask mom when I see her again) and went to Methodist, Baptist and Catholic churches..the Baptists had the best singing. I can't fully embrace any notion that excludes large groups of people and religions tend to do that.   • Great post Roxy.....as usual I'm a bit late here in posting, but I think if your religion makes sense to you and gives you comfort and peace, that's a great thing and you are lucky to have aligned yourself with something so valued. My animals and landscapes give me a bit of that sense of comfort and peace, where religion for me doesn't do it at all, in fact I felt stifled and trapped as a young person. I live in a state that's predominantly one religion, which I have never been able to relate to in the least, but if it works for those people, I can swing with them believing that if they allow me to believe as I choose.   I sincerely apologise to anyone who may have taken offense from any of my remarks concerning so-called alternative sexualities (I find "alternative" offensive - we are all sexual, one way or another).
  
  I respect anyone their preferences, as long as one respects others with it. "Decent" behaviour is not an old fashioned concept - whats private, between two loving people, should be private. No, that's not "what you do behind closed doors" - I don't play grab-ass with my wife on the street, either. She's probably deck me, anyway....
  
  What I had hoped to get across earlier was that "normal" only excludes that which is harmful to others. I agree, Magenta, that beating and rape are not only unacceptable, but abhorrent and disgusting. Pederasty is also the truest form of perversion, no matter how much the Mettacine Society carries on about "Man-Boy" love.
  
  I don't recall ever putting these things in the same room, let alone the same book as homosexuality, transgenderism, or transvestitism, however. If my remarks were interpreted that way, please accept my correction.
  
  On Mr. Izzard, specifically - I think the man is marvellously intelligent, witty, brilliant, witty (oh, I said that...) - and I, just like some, have played the tapes over and over again. I have no issue with the way he dresses. That neither interferes with, or enhances what is at work - his MIND.
  
  My "assertion" of being happily married and heterosexual was by no means casting aspersions on anyone's sexual preferences. I am slightly taken aback by accusations of homophobia. I have no fear there. I make no excuses, its not for me - but that doesnt mean I deny anyone else. The only statement that I was apparently putting poorly was that I make no judgements about a PERSON based on gender preference.   Eddie makes fun of it and doesn't believe in it, but there is nothing wrong with religion per se, the problem is how it is used as a reason for countless wars and racial intolerance.
  I'm Jewish, born that way, had to put up with a lot of racial abuse as a kid.I do not live up to any of the stereotypes at all, except, probably I do feed people a lot!
  It really doesn't matter what religion you are as long as it improves your life and the lives of the people you encounter on the way. Nobody needs religion just to be a good moral person.If you use religion as an excuse to hate, you are going wrong somewhere.

I mean some one like Jesus or Buddha has a moment of searing insight, he experiences God or Enlightenment, a transcendent moment when he sees the Truth of all of existence. This knowledge is impossible to demonstrate to others, it has to be experienced, but he tries, going all around the countryside preaching his story, eyes on fire, and the people are drawn to this speaker that they begin to follow him and commit every word to memory, the legend grows up around the holy man, it is written down and become sacred text. When the Holy man dies, everything is preserved and revered as dogma. So now we have a religion, but the Holy Man's indescribable transcendent experience, that has eluded everyone.
