From Daily Variety "Peta Wilson, who toplined TV's "La Femme Nikita," has signed as the femme lead in "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" for 20th Century Fox.

The Australian-born actress will portray Dracula's former paramour, Mina Harker. She replaces Italian beauty Monica Bellucci ("Malena"), who'd signed on for the role (Daily Variety, May 17). Bellucci's current project, Revolution Studios' Bruce Willis starrer "Man of War," has overrun its wrap date by a month, and insiders say "League's" July 2 start date would not have allowed Bellucci --- for whom English is a third language --- enough time to prep for the role.

Produced by Columbia-based Don Murphy via his Angry Films and directed by Stephen Norrington, "League" is set to begin lensing July 2 in the Czech Republic, Malta and the U.K.

Based on a graphic novel by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill, "League" revolves around explorer Allan Quatermain, played by Sean Connery, who's empowered by the queen of England to head a crime-fighting ensemble that includes such literary personages as Dr. Jekyll, Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man and Tom Sawyer.

Last May, Shane West, of the just-cancelled ABC skein "Once and Again" (and who also recently starred with Mandy Moore in the sleeper "A Walk to Remember" for Warner Bros. and Gaylord) inked to play police detective Tom Sawyer in the pic.

Project will be overseen by TCF senior veepee Michael Andreen and Fox topper Tom Rothman. "
